if you ask me it was the brits that created english so we should be the ones allowed to alter it not the USA

American English is not incorrect. It is simply a variant of British English, which has its roots in the French-Norman conquest of the Anglo and Saxon peoples. Read Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue, it's a good book.
