I personally like PM's. They are easier to read and it's almost all prime-related stuff. Prime stuff can get lost in my Email, which has many other things. I don't want to mess with having several Email accounts nor having Email open while I'm posting on the forums.

You use Gmail, right? You could use a "Prime" label to keep track of what's related to that or not. You can set up automatic filters so that if it's from one of us it will automatically add it, and you could give out your email address here as gd_barnes+prime at gmail and set up another filter so that if it's to that address it'll have the label.

But why go through all that when you could simply PM? I mean it is a good idea and all (I use gmail too), but it just takes effort :)

I seem to be a pretty bad offender too, with all those logfiles people keep PMing me :)

Cleaning things up was a very nice trip through memory lane. All those crises look so trivial from a distance of years :)

No problem Mike!
I delete all PMs as soon as I read them, or handle what the reason for the PM was in the first place.
I always prefer email myself, and only use the PM service you provide as a 'ToDo' list or as an alert to be handled, then deleted.
I can keep all my emails organized easily and so can anyone else with good habits and filters on the inbox.

Keep up the nice work around here

I second this. I prefer that most of my "prime stuff" be right here with the exception of results files that people need to send me and "sent" server stuff and sieved files that I send out.

I have 12-15 different "folders" at Gmail, 2 of them related to the above prime stuff. If I had people Email me everytime they sent me a PM, there'd be 3 different ones related to prime stuff. I'd have to keep filing stuff or would have a hard time finding it within all of my general Emails. I don't want to mess with all of that filter stuff. It just gets to be a nuisance.

Mike., no one ever answered my original questions:

Will our PM's > 100 be deleted?

If so, will all but the newest 100 of them be kept?

I kind of need to know.

Thanks,
Gary

We do not know what happens when the quota is lowered.

We have been a bit busy lately so we have not had much time to look into all this.

There is a vBulletin forum and some documentation available.

Given that we do not have adequate time right now to properly evaluate this situation, we have made the following changes, effective immediately:
  • Private messages are limited to 5×103 characters.
  • The private message quota you have had until now has not changed.
  • Forum messages are limited to 1×104 characters.
Hopefully, the forum limit will encourage the use of attachments for long code listings.

We will continue to investigate this issue but it will be a while before we fully understand how best to deal with it.

Snake1: We are not sure Ernst or Cheesehead will like this…

Ah, that works. Thanks!

Meanwhile, I think I've figured out where all that stuff hogging the database is coming from. I've noticed that one user in particular has a postcount of \infty. Even if all those posts were blank posts, the headers and what-have-you would still fill up the database with infinite bytes.

The database has compression software that allows infinitely many posts to fill only finite space, as long as a cofinite number of posts are identical.
