Default Asus P5WD2 Premium and Intel Q9950S?

I just recognized that according to this list the Intel Core2Quad Q9550s needs socket 775, which is the same socket as the Asus P5WD2 Premium motherboard in my P4 box has got. So is this motherboard compatible with the Q9550s processor, i.e. can I upgrade this box by just replacing the P4 processor by a Q9950s? (this one currently seems to be quite close to "best bang for kilowatt".)

Looks like it 'might' work, but according to a quick google search, lots of folks have problems, especially with overclocking.

I suggest you do more research before making your decision.

Thanks.

In this case I will consider buying a new motherboard, or I will wait for a few more months to see what the new 32 nm technology brings.

No (at least according to Asus). Check out their CPU Support lookup tool -- you can lookup what CPUs are supported on a given motherboard, or which motherboards support a given CPU, including requisite BIOS and board revisions. The P5WD2-Premium doesn't support anything made in the last couple years (nothing in the Core2 generation or newer).
