How do I go about installing the GIMPS software on a 6-year-old G4?

I assume you mean a PowerMac G4. If so, then you don't unless you use glucas or mlucas.

You are better off d/l'ing phrot and participating in Conjectures 'R Us or one of the PrimeGrid projects using PRPNet. That all presumes that you have OS X and not OS 9 running.

That's what I initially presumed. However, are there precompiled binaries for this, or do I have to compile everything myself?

Yeah, it's OS X, though I typically treasure computers running OS 9 as antiques.
