I find it strangely similar to a lot of modern popular music (by no means all pop music of course) in that the technical requirements of its performance are entirely visual, not audio. I think the Eurovision Song Contest in its most recent years illustrates the phenomenon quite well. Watch the live performances and you can get quite excited (well, for the first half hour perhaps, it can drag on!). Listen to the songs on the radio the day after and you are quickly disillusioned.

My understanding is that the cover version is easier to obtain than the original. I have a copy of the cover version on my PC, but have never seen a CD with the original.

Did anyone else first hear Far Away Eyes on a pub jukebox, near the end of a long, beautiful, even if painful day out with a beloved ex-girlfriend?

I first heard it on the flip side of the 12" extended single of "Miss You", which I stole from my next younger brother decades ago.

Did you notice 5 beats to at least some of the bars/gin-joints?

If I suggested they must have been listening to Sweetheart of the Rodeo I don't think I would be 100 years away.

Um, I don't quite follow that.....

I wanted "Miss You", but we have since become extremely fond of "Faraway Eyes."

If I suggested they must have been listening to Sweetheart of the Rodeo I don't think I would be 100 years away.

Could be, but this tune is mighty close to "Satisfied Mind",

I haven't quite sussed it either, but I suspect whatever they were doing was at least semi-intentional.
It is certainly not as blatantly obvious as Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" or Pink Floyd's "Money".
