Default Sludge Metal

Acid Bath is one of the seminal bands of the American Sludge Metal movement.

This song is called "Scream of the Butterfly". Sludge metal is not very loud, in fact, it is meant to be slow and soft, so I think most people would not be annoyed by them at all. This is best listened to when drunk or dazed

Perhaps a more bearable song: "The Sacrilegious Scorn" by Dimmu Borgir:

(lyrics included!)
You have taste. Dimmu Borgir are very good, inspite of them only getting the compositions by Galder that are not good enough for Old Man's Child.
Old Man's Child - Felonies of the Christian Art

On some albums every song is a masterpiece. Reinkaos is one of those albums. And even on those albums some songs are more equal than others.
Dissection - Starless Aeon (perfectly placed acoustic break at 1:48)

Memory lane I: Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
Dark Angel fans got an average of 65 more points on their English SATs than Metallica fans. (Ok - I made that up. But never needed to look up words for any Metallica song.)

Memory lane II: Forbidden - Chalice Of Blood (Live 1989)
Unfortunately it was beginning to show that they were taking the wrong (amount of) drugs, when I saw them in 1990.
This is the best track from the second album.

Thumbs up

Forbidden is my new favorite thrash metal band! Thanks, _HRB_!

A great Lamb of God (they were originally called Burn the Priest) song titled "Omerta". The beginning speech is priceless:

You're welcome! Some guy on youtube posted: "It's cliched, but they simply don't make music like this anymore." I think he was right.

Compare, e.g. the 1987 recording of "Over the Wall" by Testament
Testament - Over The Wall (original, 1987)

with the 2001 re-recording by the same band
Testament - Over The Wall (re-recording, 2001)

I don't know what it is, but the 2001 version simply has less soul. Speeding the new version up by 4% with software to match the original speed, is only (if at all) a slight improvement.

Lagniappe:
Vio-lence - Phobophobia (1988)

Btw, I prefer to go by albums (and possibly tracks), not bands. That way I have no problems stating that Master Of Puppets (1986) rules but that Metallica (1991-) are total douchebags.

That guy is exactly right.

I think thrash metal in the '80s was awesome. But, to me it seems that most of the bands from that era have gone downhill since (<cough>Metallica</cough>, to use the most cliched example).

That's fine. The only reason I went by bands was because most people on this forum don't listen to metal, and I thought I would promote the bands instead.

I am so glad that finally someone agrees that Metallica 90's and later are rather bad (St. Anger is a glaring example in support of this). It's as though Metallica simply cannot get over Cliff Burton's passing. Also, I still don't see why Dave Mustaine so badly wants in Metallica after almost 30 years...he honestly needs to grow up (I like some Megadeth songs though).

That's my two cents

Sturgeon's Law is universal. If 90% of metal is crud, then 10% of metal is not crud...and people who consciously remain ignorant of these 10%, obviously belong to the 90% of people who are crud.

Not-crudness (random order, random genre):

I think it's easier to list their stuff that isn't crud: 2 complete albums (RTL, MOP) and 5-10 of individual songs/covers. "Blitzkrieg" was a great, but you simply don't cover "Overkill" if your vocalist owns a toothbrush, and you intend to play all notes properly.

i have yet to find someone who disagrees with that statement.after justice... metallica were terrible. ride the lightning is my favourite album of theirs.

dissection sound like a great band, ill have to listen to some more of them.

Dave mustaine is a dick, but at the same time is a legend,he kind of sold out like metallica but he still made decent music.

Believe me, I know many idiots who disagree with that statement, unfortunately.

Same, along with Master of Puppets.

Agreed. Have you listened to Megadeth's new album, Endgame?

Default Tchaikovsky and Climatic endings

Although "Waltz of the Flowers" may sound a bit "middle of the road"
for some tastes, the last minute is simply orgasmic.
I like it with a very slight accelerando, natural crescendo,
and the last 4 bars maintaining strict tempo.
e.g. this version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYqH8vkcHqY
Many versions have a ritardando at the end which IMO is
nothing less than Coitus Interruptus
(Or at the very least "gilding the lily")

Opinions welcome, as are suggestions for other favourite endings.
