Having a backup of the old proves your lack of stupidity.

Then the icon turns http://www.mersenneforum.org/images/off.gif. In the old forum, the icon would automatically turn from orange to gray if you read all the new posts in the forum.
Read more about it here.
I haven't finished reading that thread yet, but it describes the problem to a "T". It should have been fixed in version 2.8 according to the early posts, but we'll see what the final outcome is.

Once version 3 of vBulletin goes final we will upgrade to that... I suppose a lot of problems will be fixed then, including this read indicator problem...

One possible fix might to be to enable no-cache headers... Basically every request you make for a page is pulled straight from the server and not your local cache... The positive to this approach is you always get the right stuff but the drawback is that it puts a larger load on the server and on the bandwidth... We have bandwidth to spare, but I'm not sure how much the database server can handle...

When I return back to the home page, I click Refresh and all the "new posts" indicators update fine. Is this not happening for you? You aren't expecting the browser to know that you want it to refresh on one "special" page, but not on the others?

Note: This is written from the experience that my "unread posts" sometimes seem to be time-based. That is -- certain activities like refreshing a page, previewing, and posting will set a "You last visited: ..." cookie, and any posts older than that get marked as read, whether I've read them or not. This only happens occationally, but often enough to be annoying.

While I am digging into forums and reading new posts, I do NOT want them to update. It's bad enough that posting and previewing resets them -- that forces me to queue up several empty "post reply" windows until after I've read all the new posts. Then I hit refresh to see any changes, read those, and finally I can reply.

I would much rather jump thru some silly hoop to reset the new post indicator than have them disappear if I blink at the wrong time. Because finding the new posts without the indicator is a real pain, especially on the active threads. And trying to time-stamp a cookie somewhere to restore them would be a really silly hoop.

I think what people want is this:

There are 3 new posts... All 3 are lit...

I read post number 1... I go back to the home page... Now only 2 posts are lit...

Right now if I go back to the home page all 3 are still lit...

Maybe I'm browsing wrong?

If I use the new posts page how do I know if someone posts a new post while I'm reading new posts?

Xyzzy, (and others)

What happens to you when:

There are 3 new posts... All 3 are lit...

You read post number 1... You go back to the home page... All 3 are still lit...

You press Refresh... Are 2 posts lit? 3? 0?

If you could guarrantee that it will never be 0, then I would be very happy! (Most often I get 2, sometimes its 0.)

If you end up with 2 lit posts in the situation above, then pressing Refresh on the new posts page should work for you. Does it?

Let me try to make clear the behavior I am seeing.

I'm at the home page, I see the icon next to the lounge yellow, showing that there are new posts in the lounge. Then I go to the lounge and read all the threads that have an icon showing that there are new posts. After reading all the threads, the icons next to the threads will change showing that I have read the threads. However, if I go to the homepage, the icon next to the lounge will still be yellow, which should indicate that there are still unread threads with new posts in the lounge, but there are not! The only way to gray the icon next to the lounge on the home page is to go to the lounge and click "mark forum read." I shouldn't have to do this because I have already read the forum manually, and the forum knows it because there are no unread threads with new posts!

Anyway, the impression I get is it won't be fixed until v3.0 of the forum software. Until then, I need to remember to manually click on "mark forum read" after reading the forum to gray out the icon on the main page.

At least in my case, the Lounge still shows unread messages - but they are the same messages I just read.

I also haven't found any way to get them marked as "read" except to mark the whole forum read. It's very annoying.

It took more than a few minutes, but I finally figured it out... I had to go into the database and recreate it... You can update your location in the user profile area...

JPG files don't work any more as avatars. GIFs do.

Not really a complaint, it can easily be worked around. Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else is struggling with it.

JPG files work fine for me... There is a 10,000 byte limit to the size... What exact error are you seeing?

No error message. The JPG was 2 kB. It just repeatedly blanks out the entry box next to Browse when I hit "Submit Modifications" and switches itself back to "Use Avatar" = No if I use a JPG.

GIF worked first time.

I noticed that when writing private messages, the new software does not allow you to preview your message.
