Microsoft still calls it "downgrade" since Vista is newer. I have been discouraged from XP-64 because it has even fewer drivers than Vista-64 |

Petrw1,
I have Windows XP 64 bit on 3 PCs and Windows Server 2003 64 bit on 1 PC. While I do mostly normal PC stuff (i.e. MS Office, web surfing, etc.) I have had minimal driver problems so far. While Creative didn't have a driver for their sound card on my Windows Server 2003 PC until many months after I installed it, they eventually supplied one. My US Robotics 5660a dial-up modem doesn't work on XP 64 bit, but the 5670 does. Unless you have some very old or exotic hardware, I would not worry too much about a lack of 64 bit XP drivers. Of course your mileage may vary. I can't compare Vista 64 bit performance to anything because I don't have it on any of my PCs but it is true that XP 64 bit TF performance is double that of XP 32 bit if you use both XP 64 bit and Prime95 64 bit. I've got a 965 shipping next week. Waiting for a couple Intel SSDs to ship all at once. 6 GB of RAM. Yes, Vista 64.

Here's an article with some discussion about the low L2 cache size of Nehalem that some people have been concerned about. Apparently, there is a move towards giving each core a smaller individual cache and instead having them share from a large pool. I don't know what to make of this in terms of the effects on GIMPS.

Yes, AVX would make GIMPS significantly faster, at the price of needing an awful lot of code to be very substantially rewritten - it's as big a jump as when SSE2 came in.
