"Holding the World Record for XX years running." "The Unrivaled World Leader Finding Mersenne Primes" "Owner of the First Ever 1,000,000 Digit Prime" "Kick Crays to the Curb Since 1996" "Besting the Supercomputer Since 1996" etc. Couldn't the server be set up to rotate the banner? The links http://prime.isthe.com/chongo/tech/m...9/prime-c.html and http://prime.isthe.com/chongo/tech/m...7/prime-c.html appear to be broken.
So what was the press outlet? Last fiddled with by jinydu on 2008-09-16 at 13:31 |

San Diego Union Tribune. They said they'd do an article today or tomorrow. They relented on the embargo. Several other news outlets have asked for the press release. Don't be surprised if the news comes out of Europe first. |

When M37156667 was reported prime, the primenet reports correctly displayed the fact that there were two unverified primes. What no one noticed was that in the cleared exponents report, only M37156667's residue was masked. For 3 hours, M43112609 sat there displaying a residue of 0000000000000000. When I saw that I quickly deleted 43112609 from the server database - the count went back to 1.
A few hours later, I tried reinserting the row but with the fake residue. This time the cleared report showed the fake residue but it was right justified instead of left justified. I thought someone would spot that, so I removed the row again. For several days, no one noticed that 43112609 was missing from the report. Until patrik tried to submit a P-1 result... So, I reinserted 43112609 with the fake residue and marked it composite. I then changed M38859463's state to prime. The unverified count was right and the cleared report properly displayed 43112609's fake residue. I'm somewhat surprised that the super sleuths here never figured it out! ![]() I just noticed that I have a copy of the cleared.txt that shows M46 with a 0 residue (right justified BTW), but I never noticed. How did I miss that!??!!?!? Why in the world didn't I think to look for a 0 residue?!?!?! ![]() *bang head on keyboard* (anyone know of a good smiley-type picture for that?) Unfortunately, when I got that cleared.txt, I was looking for MSep, not MAug, otherwise I might've noticed it before I removed all without 0x in the correct spot. Here's that line: Code:
43112609 69 0000000000000000 23-Aug-08 07:33 UclaMath C20E3341C

Strange. I thought some of the other sleuths had hourly archives of the cleared.txt report and would have caught something like this.

I hadn't been watching that closely, since I knew that everyone else was, and they were better sleuths than I. That is one funny story, though! Grats to everyone involved! |

Funny indeed - it must have been a heart-stopping moment when you noticed the 0 residue and a frantic struggle to cover it up.
![]() Maybe some people did in fact notice but decided to keep quiet because they value the GIMPS project and its integrity and newsworthyness. I didn't notice it myself, I hasten to add. Last fiddled with by Brian-E on 2008-09-16 at 14:55 Reason: typing error |
