Actually soaps are a salts of fat. So the calories in 1 pound of soap will be the same as 1 pound of fat. (3500 kcal)

Other than the taste it is a good alternative to eat. It actually gets absorbed better than fat in the body and it also provides calcium.

So if you don't mind the taste, eat a bar everyday. A bar a day keeps the doctor away.

The body will not digest all fats the same. If it is a "salt" of a "fat" doesn't mean that there is any nutrative value. Most are sodium based. The soap bars also have a water component. And likely they contain extra NaCl (or NH4Cl), some form of EDTA, fragrance, and coloring agents. The value to the body is likely more like 2000 kcal per pound.

I wouldn't recommend it myself. Surfactants do interesting things to the lining of the gut. If you wish to perform the experiment I would recommend you have easy access to a toilet and be prepared to call in medical assistance if required.

The other components (perfumes, chelating agents, what not) are not generally regarded as being part of a healthy diet.

OK, you can eat soap in an emergency, but the nature of the emergency should be that starvation is likely to kill you before eating soap does you in.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. A bulb of garlic a day keeps everyone away.

Tallow candles are a better food source. Not tasty, but better for you in a pinch.

Candles are made of wax, I do not think the body can absorb it. So of no nutrient value.

Actually on double checking the body can't absorb soap also unless it is less than 16 carbons. I think soap uses sodium laurate, deodecic acid or something like that. (I am not sure what fatty acids are used to make soap).
May be Xilman can answer this one, since he is a chemist.

Some candles are indeed made of mineral wax and have essentially no nutritive value.

However, Uncwilly specifically mentioned tallow candles. Tallow is animal fat (from sheep, if memory serves) and can certainly be digested.

whoa, this thread is back from the dead.

It was the first post in the soap-box (i beat xyzzy to it, how did that happen?). I didn't really know what a soapbox was, so I started talking about... soap. I'm surprised that dial still has that image on their website; soap digest seems to rotate their image every week.
