Does anyone else share my view that there is
potential confusion between the interpretations 1) "FLoating point OPerationS" 2) "FLoating point Operations Per Second"? David |

I've always considered it to be the 'per second' version, and never think of it as just the number ops.

I just noticed that primenet writes GFLOP / s.
The role of the "P" really ratchets up the ambiguity! The interpretation of the s as denoting the plural doesn't help much either. And neither does "FLOating Point":) The L is necessitated by the need to distinguish "floating" from the only alternative "fixed". Last fiddled with by davieddy on 2008-05-19 at 08:53 |

I can live with that. But does the "s" denote plural, multiply, or divide by seconds? (Or for that matter "owned by FLOP") This may be clearer in a language where "seconds" don't start with "s" or they form their plurals differently. David PS I can feel a contribution from Ernst comiing on here:) Last fiddled with by davieddy on 2008-05-19 at 12:51 |

from wikipedia, FLOP:
In computing, FLOPS (or flops or flop/s) is an acronym meaning FLoating point Operations Per Second. (...) Alternatively, the singular FLOP (or flop) is used as an abbreviation for "FLoating-point OPeration", and a flop count is a count of these operations (e.g., required by a given algorithm or computer program). In this context, "flops" is simply the plural rather than a rate. Last fiddled with by m_f_h on 2008-05-19 at 13:23 Reason: link fix |

So multiply, divide and plural are all context dependent.
Splendid. I knew someone was going to tell me to ![]() And/or
