Yes. The simplest way is to open Synaptic and search for it. The package may be buildessentials, or perhaps build-essential or build-essentials, don't really remember, but it installs many useful development tools. I recommend installing it. Likewise, you can use Synaptic to search for and install GMP.

You're welcome.
What you should have memorized by now is that typing an error message directly into a Google search is an extremely powerful way of finding solutions to the problem. It doesn't always work but it should always be one of the first things you try. Paul |

Thank goodness for Google. Even with Hardy Heron (8.04 LTS) there's many installation issues for a first time Ubuntu installer - or at least there was on the Athlon 64 version. Most of the issues I had, had to do with package conflicts. Synaptic is a very easy package manager, to say the least. It's a whole lot more useful though, if you look up addition package archives to add to your list. (Google for good examples)
Get to know your friends 'su' and 'sudo' in the terminal and you will find that you never need the (disabled) root account login. It's disabled in the sense that you're not allowed to log into the GUI with it by default. You use the same password for administration tasks as you used to log in, in case you've never used Ubuntu. I highly recommend you get an external drive/extra hard drive to use with it though. It's a lot easier to have everything running off a hard drive. What I want for Linux, is a 64-bit version of a certain program <hint> <hint> that doesn't require 2 CPUs. Yeah, my CPU isn't multicore and Prime95 hates it. |
