Let's try to avoid a flame war with PrimeGrid here. NPLB also previously got some of the same complaints when we took on k=1003-2000; subsequently reduced to k=1400-2000 when we received the results files from Peter Benson. It's a delicate situation. NPLB tries to avoid hurt feelings but the fact is there are two schools of thought in all of this:

On one side you have:
No one can claim ownership of any part of the math world. No one can say that "These k's, n-ranges, and primes are mine".

On the other side you have:
It is the most efficient CPU-wise overall to coordinate with existing reservations. It is unkind and breaks the moral code of DC and prime searching to infringe upon other's reservations, regardless of how long it is taking those people or projects to search them.

For the greater good of the math world you have:
If people who reserve swaths of k's and n-ranges are not searching them fast enough nor posting their statuses, they are holding up information that the math world is entitled to. Hence other people or projects are apt to step in and give them a nudge and if that doesn't do it, then the project is likely to take it over because the math world is entitled to that information.

There has to be some kind of compromise amongst all of these views. NPLB takes the following stance: We don't own k=300-2000. People are welcome to search there and must stay ahead of our drives. If they bite off too many k's (a few people have > 100 k's reserved for k<10000 which is way too many for most people!), they will find it difficult to stay ahead of us. It's not easy to stay ahead of a semi-automated project with well-sieved files and several well-healed searchers! People are always fully aware of our intentions months in advance. They have plenty of time to get their k's searched to a reasonable depth well ahead of where we are at with them or to unreserve them.

k=355 is complete to n=700K and unreserved.
k=357 is at n=680K
k=363 is at n=676K

Closing in on n=700K for all k<400!

Mike,

Can you give us a status on your reservation for k=315/321/327/333/339/345 for n=950K-1M?

Likely our 6k drive in the server will be near n=950K within a month or so. I'm not saying you need to be done by then; just wanted to make sure things are progressing.

Thanks,
Gary

Right now, I don't have access to the machine that's working on those k's, so I don't have a status report on them. It's working backwards, starting from n=1M and progressing down.

Tell you what - I'll let the drive go on another 20K to n=970K, since my computer will probably be a bit above that (970-972K?) by the time I get access to it this summer.

I'm confused. So is your machine searching upwards from n=950K to 970K and another machine searching down from n=1M to 970K so that you will complete the entire range? Or are you reducing your reservation to only n=970K-1M because that is all that the other machine will complete by this summer? I can't tell if you are talking about 2 different machines here.

English can be highly ambiguous. lol

The only machine working on those k's is the one that's searching down from n=1M to n=970K. I'm not working on n=950-970K, so the mini-drive can continue until n=970K.

OK; thanks for clarifying. You better have someone check that machine. You might have a huge prime by now!

To make it official: The 6k mini-drive will now include n=600K-970K for k=315/321/327/333/339/345.

Port G8000 is the place to be if you would like some higher tests. It is currently at n>820K. A prime at that level will come in better than 460th place all time.

Karsten,

Can you process the results for the 6k mini-drive to me for n=700K-800K? Thanks.

I think that will catch all of the drives up; for a few days anyway.

Max,

Please go ahead and load n=950K-970K into port G8000 for the 6 k's drive. Thanks.
