In response to the "Atlantic Wire" article which cheesehead links and quotes above, I'd be interested to know if anyone here actually feels personally victimised by the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA, or personally threatened by marriage equality activists in general, as suggested by Rush Limbaugh. It's an issue I've heard raised before, but I've never been able to understand it: the oft-quoted advice...

those who don't like same sex marriage should not marry someone of the same sex

...has always seemed to me to cover any potential difficulties around opening marriage to same sex couples. If anyone can help me see past my blinkered viewpoint, I'd be genuinely grateful.

Just watched John Wayne's final (and wonderfully nuanced) film The Shootist a couple nights ago on AMC. Reading up on the film afterward I saw that Wayne - who was sometimes accused of being a hardcore righty-whitey, was married 3 times - and each of his wives was Latina.

[Now, he may still have been a hardcore righty-whitey in public life, but apparently not at home.]

Using gay as an insult seems to be so prominent in society that I tend to think of it as a homonym relative to gay meaning homosexual.

Here in the US, we don't get a choice with some of our taxes, so when homosexuals get tax write-offs for something we(I mean Christians in this case) find offensive, it kind of affects our own tax burden. That's what offends me the most, I can't speak for other Christains.

It's like I've said before, I don't hate homosexuals, I hate homosexuality. Just like I don't hate murderers, I just want people to be safe.

Yes, the word certainly does seem to get used as a generic insult with no intended reference to sexuality. Unfortunately, that generates a lot of confusion amongst both those doing the insulting and those insulted, and it contributes to homophobia in general. This in turn leads to enormous distress amongst people, especially youngsters, who are coming to terms with their sexuality. Ultimately it can, and does, result in teenage suicides.
