Woo-hoo! I got people riled up. Hopefully you'll kick our behinds for the next rally!

Sure, bring the guy with 200 cores. Putting him here would be kind of overkill but we need base 16 Riesel and Sierp at CRUS tested up to n=200K. I have sieved files ready to go. Or perhaps he can wipe out our double-check effort in 2-3 days! lol (not ready yet though)

Beyond a small fry? Oooh, that IS scary!

I guess when we have Riesel base 256 tested to n=500K (n=4M base 2) with 20 k's still remaining, those 200 cores would come in very handy!

Free-DC would be a great resource for high n-ranges on a conjectures project if folks there are interested in such efforts.

BTW, do you need to have a certain amount of firepower to join Free-DC?

Lastly, what's the most # of cores you guys have ever heard of anyone running at once? I heard Chris Cooper has 300-400 available through his school (or job).

If so, you are truly the gadget/electronics/computer freak. My dad's work area in the basement used to look like this. He was an electrical engineer and always had something that he was tinkering with.

With 200 cores, I imagine manual work would be a big pain in the butt to manage--maybe we could set up a private LLRnet server for him if he was to help out at CRUS?

I think Carlos said that that garage belonged to the guy with 200 cores.

I think he's referring to the person with over 200 cores, not himself. Especially because he called it "his" garage, not "my" garage.

Do you mean 22 TB of memory for each machine, or total?

And I just have to ask...where in the world did that guy get that firepower?

Total memory. That's a secret.

2600 machines * $500/machine = $1.3M plus maintenance and electricity. I'm guessing you'd get a hell of a quantity discount on so many machines, hence the low price, or perhaps this person just leases them.

A person with that much individual firepower would probably have a net worth exceeding $50M. Most likely, though, such a farm would be in a major software or electronics company or perhaps a financial or educational institution.

My guess is that no single individual would have use for so many machines. They're most likely owned by a legal entity of some kind that a few priviledged people have access to.

I was looking on the Free-DC stats site to see if I could find who the 200-core supercruncher was, and the person with the most cores had about 170; is that who you were talking about, Carlos?

Edit: I found out some more interesting info on that particular site. Apparently IronBits has 80+ cores--hey IronBits, I don't see 'em here! Oddly enough, I didn't see hardly any cores listed when I clicked on his name, and Beyond wasn't even on the list at all. Is NPLB not listed on that page for whatever reason?
