Each casino, motel, city, state and or country would give you a different public IP.
Think of IPs as phone numbers for computers... each location/phone has a different number.

I now remember why I was never interested in the P.C./server programming industry despite being in programming for nearly 15 years. There's just too much information that is constantly changing to keep up with.

And now you know why I also retired from data processing when the server revolution started. They made it way to over-complicated for the application. Gone are the days when I could name a workstation (Joe's in Marketing) and it would stay that way for decades. The only problem we had was if Joe got fired.

I get the biggest kick out of my software warning me that I have an IP address conflict on my massive 10 machine network. All those numbers to choose form and it can't find 10 different one's. Thank you, Willie in Redmond. Maybe they should make the numbers BIGGER. LMFAO

I still can't access the port 4000 web page unless I type in the exact IP address in my browser. I suspect I may need to reboot but I'm not going to do that and have to restart all my programs. I'm being stubborn because I don't need to access it right now anyway.

Here's another question for all of you P.C./server gurus. Why are P.C.'s so dumb that they have to be rebooted for updates to take effect? Linux seems to be much better than Windows, only requiring a reboot part of the time. With Windows, it's almost every time. Why design an O.S. that forces a person to effectively stop everything that he is doing just for some updates that he doesn't need over half of the time? All that I need are security updates to avoid viruses but I wonder if I even need those. I have virus-protection already on the machine. As for the other updates and upgrades to Windows software, I'd be fine if I did those about once every 1-2 years but you'd never know it the way the message keeps popping up.

I've despised Windows for many years. Although Linux has been difficult to learn, I can tell if I had learned it to begin with and could run all the programs that I need to that I'd never use Windows. There is so much unneeded background junk running all the time and the error messages are unbelievably cryptic. Windows is much "prettier" to the eye but that's about all.

If you have windows machines only dedicated to distributed computing you don't need to make the updates, only windows firewall turned on and an antivirus installed, nothing else.

A useful command David passed along the last time this happened.

Get a command prompt and type ipconfig/flushdns

That will clear up your web page problem without re-booting. But of course, you can still re-boot and give youself an opportunity to think about why we all decided years ago to make Willie a rich man.

If I only had a nickel for every re-boot I've done over the years (make that a dollar for each blue screen).

And now onto my only machine (the one that still runs Windows XP) and re-boot that puppy because the ipconfig command doesn't work on it. It's about time for it's daily re-boot anyway. I have set the background to blue so that I can get used to the color just in case of a Willie FUBAR.

All of my personal stuff is on a Window's desktop. Microsoft Money, Excel, Word, etc. My kids need much of it for their homework.

I do crunch from it. It's a dual-core Dell from late 2004; a 3.2 Ghz P4 I think. Each core runs at about half the speed of my AMD quads so it's still useful for crunching. I use it mostly for the lower n-ranges and starting bases at CRUS and a little sieving.

My dual-core laptop is also Windows, although it is slower than my desktop...a 1.6 Ghz AMD H.P. from 2007, which is best used for sieving. I need Word and Excel on it for use in our business.

Those are all of my 'slower' cores that I refer to from time to time.

The 10 quads are all Linux, thankfully.

Unfortunately we did the no-IP thing on my Windows desktop. Max has now put it on the same Linux machine as port 4000 so we are hoping that that finally takes care of the problem. That machine should never turn off. Although an occassional Linux update may cause necessitate a reboot, I'll avoid them on that machine unless absolutely necessary.

Funny about that blue background. Yeah, I know what you mean! lmao My backgrounds are a lighter blue also like you see on my CRUS pages.

Max told me about that command, I tried it earlier, and I just now tried it again. It didn't work again, which is what I expected again. lol Windows is too stupid to understand it's own commands that are supposed to work. That's OK, if I need to get into the site, I'll just type in 76.92.239.55/llrnet, which I've done a couple of times already. I refuse to be forced to do a Windows reboot again.
