Show me a place that sells *any* hard drive, shipped, for under 60 bux...

New drives that is...

I can fit Prime95 and Linux/FreeBSD/NT4 into a 200MB hard drive... If I could buy new ones all day long for 20 bux I would...

The issue here is what is the cheapest (new, with warranty) solution for a hard drive or hard drive substitute... Only netbooting is cheaper and it is a bit more work to set up...

To the best of my knowlage, any 3.5" drive under 10 Gig is not going to be new, and anything under 20 Gig is doubtfull to be new.

Drive makers don't MAKE that small of 3.5" drives any more - and haven't for a while.

I also realise that drive pricing per Gig isn't linear - but I've also seen 20 Gig drives for less than the posted prices on those 4 giggers....

$ AU and $ CN need not apply - they don't equate to $ US that I deal in. 9-)

They are new... They are just ones that never got sold... They qualify for warranty coverage...

Which begs the question, what is the reasonable shelf life of a hard drive? How long can it sit in its box unused before it starts to deterioate on its own?

I bet you I can walk into a few mom-pop computer stores round here and see 5 gig hard drives being sold for what it used to cost when it was placed on the shelf :)

what a scary thought! 5 gig hard drives for over $10???? Anyway, I'd guess that the shelf life is up over 50 years. Well... with a 90% success rate anyway... but it's rare that even a complex circuit like a drive will go bad just sitting there. Now, if it had data on it, that'd be a different story, but without a driving voltage, there's little that can go wrong in a circuit like that.

Realistically, a HD that is not powered up should last 5-10 years - the primary limit is that the magnetic domains for the LLF will eventually randomize.

The electronics should last for decades, as long as the drive is still in the anti-static bag with some dessicant, like they're usually packaged at the factory.

i dont know if it really counts

but i just replaced abunch of lightbulbs in my room with florecent ones

my whole room temp droped by about 5 or 6 degrees makeing it much more tollrable to leave my compute ron 24/7

Not a bad idea... but florescent lights give me a glaring headache! I'd rather compute in the dark! :)

Hello every one, i found out about this program one day and thought i would give it a try, more as a stability test but now i cannot get registered so if i find one ill be the guy with a user name like jfdkslaujh, but anyways, no farm here just one really hot P4 machine. Now to the point of my ramblings: A really hot set-up has its advantages, im a live at home school kid/bum and my mom loves to keep the house at about 50F during the winter, so my space heater / computer / electric skillet helps keep me warm and toasty at night (I would prefer a female for that task, but they do not come and visit us bumx that often)
well I hope I got a few smiles from everyone and nite nite
