Actually, because I live in Santa Clara, I pay less. Santa Clara has it's own electricity company. Thanks to Intel, Nvidia and a whole bunch of computer parts compnaies that pay more, residents only pay 6.5 and 7.5 cents per kilowatt/hour.
My electric bill for the last 30 days ending on Aug. 9, was $110. I will compare it to the next one and post here. |

![]() What about running each of your 15 prime95's from a subdirectory on the servers drive? (Your farm has a server, yes?) Then the local drives would power down and stay that way. If you want to get fancy, you can use pause/resume to syncronize them:[list]All write in the same minute. -- stagger the local clocks by a few sec. Each write in sequencial minutes. -- use the servers clock.[/list:u]This might change your backup scheme a little... |

No, no server. Each machine is independent.
I tend to do some special functions for my team and need to be able to change things quickly. Also, I'm too illiterate to use VNC or other remote control proggies. On another note, I had one machine freeze up on me yesterday. I don't know if it was because of the power downs, but I will keep an eye on it so it doesn't do it again. |

The same machine froze again.
I am leaving the hard drive on full time. Let's see if this helps. |

I've done the server thing because a few of the machines I run Prime95 on get reimaged almost every other day. If you do this, I HIGHLY recommend making sure you have a backup...it sucks losing 6+ machines with one hard drive crash.
Has anyone else tried using a Novell server (I tried a 5.0 and 5.1) to run Prime95 from? I was able to with some of the early V22, (It ran for weeks) but started having problems around 22.5 (I think.) When I started Prime95, the PC would lose its connection to the server. Then if I rebooted the PC, and browsed to the file location, explorer would "Lock" and I would lose my connection without even running Prime '95. I'm now using a NT workstation to "Share" the files from...but it's limited to 10 connections. Running 6 machines from it isn't a problem. -SD |

Well even with the hard drive running full time, I got a vxd illegal operation and a BSOD.
I turned the monitor back on full time and have had no problems for 8 hours. Will report back in another 24. |

I noticed that in power savings if you shut down moronitor it also shuts off the vid - this may be causing you problems. I use geforce's as my default vid, so no issues, perhaps a ratty pci is to blame in your case. You can always just turn off the monitor yourself.

This computer doesn't have a monitor unless I plug one in.
And it has an ATI AGP vid card. I think the problem is somewhere in the drivers for the vid card. As long as it is being powered, nothing goes wrong. But when it powers down, whammy, all hell breaks loose. Since it is only one machine, I am not going to worry about it. But I definitely know that the heat is way down. I'll let you know about the electricity usage in a month. |

After I noticed the freeze with both HD and monitor powered down, I turned the HD back to always running. Since the computer was frozen with no screen, I could not tell what was wrong.
Later that day, I plugged the monitor in and got a BSOD with vm.vxd fatal exception(I think). Since I saw a vxd, I assumed a video problem. Then I turned the monitor to be always on. I've had no problems since. Before I tried the power downs, this machine had been running for about 6 months in the always on configuration with no problems. |

Ati - problem identified.
My first and only experience with an Ati card ended with me removing it from the box with a pair of tin snips. After that it got worked on with a hammer. |
