Seems, I'm a member now. Hi to everybody, greetings from rainy Vienna.

Not from one of the three (!!!) "Vienna"-towns in the US, but from the real and only "Vienna", the capital of Austria, the heart of Europe!!!

I never had a question, which Chris Caldwell's "Prime Pages" or those of this forum didn't answer, so I didn't even had to ask them ...

It's a good feeling to know, that there's a lot of people thinking similarly to me.

yeah... great minds (i.e. those that routinely spend thousands of dollars on machines that will be run continuously doing nothing but searching for a number that happens to have no factors but 1 and itself) think alike.

Well, I am very new to this. One of my professors told me about GIMPS because I have to write a paper about "prime numbers." I havent really decided what to write about yet, but I think I will write about the search for new ones, how people are doing it, and the uses for them, ie. encrytion. If anyone reads this, if they could just give me a little info about this oddslot program and what have you, in a very easy to understand language, I would very much appreciate it.

Follow this link: www.mersenne.org (GIMPS home page). From there, you can find any sort of info you need, including links to other interesting and educating pages about primes (e.g. Chris Caldwell´s). And of course, you can join us in the search...

I'm new here, to the forums, I mean. I've been running GIMPS on my (now many) computer for 4 years now. It's been a great joy. Anywho, how many numbers has everyone factored so far? I lost count, but it's about 20 I believe.
