I agree with George, the more press the merrier. Most of my initial contacts are done. A certain amount of 'chain-reaction' needs to happen, particularly for the print magazines, so look for additional coverage over the next month or so.

My main list included:

New Scientist*
San Jose Mercury News+
Portland Oregonian
Lansing State Journal (Michael's home town)
MSU State News (Michael's university newspaper)*
San Diego Union-Tribune
San Diego Metro
BBC Science*
American Scientist^
Science News*
Discovery Channel Canada*
Discover
21st Century Science & Technology
Smithsonian
Science
Scientific American
Wolfram (www.wolfram.com , www.mathpuzzle.com , www.maa.org )*
CNet/ZDNet*
Grid Computing Planet
Reed College news
NPR (National Public Radio)

Key:
* did/doing article
+ responded with interested, might do article
^ responded favorably, will do later article
(blank) no reponse yet, maybe too soon to tell

Generally, it's a good idea for a coordinated press effort to avoid repeating contacts, so I'd suggest not sending anything more to the above organizations, but rather find new ones - and there are many!

Getting an editor's attention is a bit of an art. I can help anyone wanting some example emails I sent that worked - email me for those (just keep in mind PR is NOT my primary experience base!). If you do end up sending a press email somewhere, PLEASE cc primenet @ mersenne.org or George!!

The German weekly "Der Spiegel" had the news in its Online-Edition just a few hours ago.

Best,

That Mlive.com articles says that 1 is a prime number haha, Oh well, at least the rest of the article gives pretty good information.

A couple of things:

Has Dr Chris Caldwell replaced his article with the Official Press Release ?

I have reorganized the links in the The 40th Mersenne Prime! post, so the links section there show a kind of history of the M40.
