Probably this is not the right forum but I'm trying to apply for a PhD degree in the field of Engineering (Energy, Thermodynamics, Mechanical of Fluids, etc). I contacted a university in the USA and got a reply with the following attachment. First they want me to tell them how I will fund my studies, then to choose a supervisor by looking for one at the university webpage and finally they want me to write a PhD research proposal. Is the latter common? How many pages should I write?

Hmmm.. That is unusual. What university was that may I ask? Reputable universities in the US usually have clear guidelines for PhD applicants. There is often funding available as well.

With a few PhD applies I swapped the references. The previous university is not in the USA but it's the UCL Energy Institute in London.
