I've put in an order with my usual supplier, since the 8-core Xeon D looks like the perfect chip for an NFS-sieving machine. Should have it in my hands by May.

Who's your supplier in UK?

I'm also interested in this as my systems here are all 5 years old or more and, in one unfortunate case, non-functional.

Please enlighten me. The Anandtech article Victor quoted says the cpu/motherboard combo will cost U.S. 800-1000 dollars.
A Haswell-E 5820-k with a pretty nice motherboard will cost less than 700 dollars. Is the lower TDP worth the difference,
especially given the much lower clock of this Soc Xeon?

Xeons E3 supports only up to 32GB of memory.

Xeon D takes up to 128 GB, which makes it a nice budget choice for ECM or P1. You could run a few very deep tests simultaneously with stage two in one go.

i7-5820K supports up to 64 GB, but no ECC.

For this kind of thing, I have a friend who runs a small hosting company and in consequence is a Supermicro reseller with a fairly good wholesale discount; I'm afraid it's not generally applicable.

Having something that I can put in a small box without having to worry about a GPU and with an effectively zero power bill is the attraction that Xeon-D has for me over Haswell-E.
