I see no reason for gun control. Anything sharp/hard/fast can be used as a weapon (knife, fork, stone, club, screwdriver, etc.), so we would have to ban those as well, and that wouldn't be worth it. Also, we need weapons (both lethal and non-lethal) for self-defense. Seriously, what would you do if someone was shooting at you? Take shelter? That wouldn't solve the problem, as the killer would just select another target, or find a vantage point where you couldn't hide from them.

Why are you so against guns? Seriously, there are numerous other things that can be used lethal weapons, as I mentioned in my last post. Banning guns would NOT solve the problem, as people would go to those alternative weapons, and banning those would make life harder. Knives and forks are needed to cut/eat many foods; rocks can be found in nature, and therefore can't be banned; clubs can be homemade (i.e. from a piece of firewood); and screwdrivers are essential in everyday life (they're used when adding/replacing hardware in your PC/MAC).
EDIT: Forgot lasers. The beam travels at c, so there's no way to avoid it. Last fiddled with by Stargate38 on 2022-01-23 at 16:30 |

I'm prepared to go "hand-to-hand" with an adversary, even if they are armed with a knife. On the other hand, if they have a gun and I don't, the odds are /strongly/ not in my favor -- I'm dead before I can even touch them. Not to say I am against trained professionals being armed as part of their jobs (read: police, security guards, etc). Presuming of course said professionals are true professionals. Where I get really uncomfortable is when a large percentage of the population around me is armed, and not necessarily well trained. Firearms are just too powerful to take the risk with (again, IMHO). |

We all have our own opinions. IMO, the only guns that could kill people are autonomous robotic weapons with AI (i.e. real-world equivalents of droid weapons). All other guns need a person to pull the trigger. Besides, there's always killing in self-defense, but only when the attacker is armed. It's done quite often, especially in war, but the common people need defensive weapons too.

Why?
A sincere question. I have no defensive weapons here in little Bimshire, and I feel completely safe. For myself, my family, and my friends. But I guess the fact that most common people around here are at best armed with a gardening machete would change the thinking a bit from being in a space where AR-15s are available retail... |

Weapons are not defensive. They are weapons.
Shields, walls, camouflage and saying sorry; those are defensive strategies. Weapons are for threatening, maiming, killing and posturing. If no one has guns then you don't need more guns to "defend" against non-existent guns. They are totally removed from consideration. |
