How do I extend a manual gpu TF assignment to additional bit levels?

Say I have a reservation to TF M_p from 2^71 to 2^72. Is it easy to modify the worktodo file to also TF M_p from 2^72 to 2^73 and still get credit and not mess up the server, etc?

Yes, some of us sometime do that, the only catch is to report both (all) bitlevels at the same time, after all finish, to avoid duplication of effort and poaching. You can also try to reserve the higher bitlevel for yourself. If you do the claimed bitlevel first and report it, the server considers the job done and it will assign the next bitlevel to somebody else, therefore if you continue to work on the same exponent without reservation, you will be the poacher and duplicate the efforts of the other assignee, wasting your (and project's) resources.

Even better is to claim the proper bitlevels, and report them when they are done, then request other work from the server, because priorities of work types and ranges may have changed meantime. Doing "unassigned" work (like extending the bitlevel or the range without assigning) you risk doing work which is not needed. Do not marry your exponents. Just do them, report, ask for others, move on. At the end, all will have to be done.
