I've tried requesting higher exponents than 70 or so for mfakto and no matter what options I put it gives errors. Am I doing something wrong?

Make sure you're in LL Trial Factoring. Set the limits from 70,000,000 to 400,000,000 (this one doesn't matter, that's the default).

Set how high you want to factor to. Minimum is 71.

Is it possible you tried putting 70 in here by mistake?

Select an option other than What Makes Sense or Let GPU72 Decide. Make sure you have the appropriate number of '0's for the range-(this is easy to slip up on.) As a test, on GPU72, I just got it to offer an assignment in the 72M range.

Any recommendations on what I could best serve by using a triple R7 260X setup? I've been running the cards when I'm not gaming at present, but with assignments from the mersenne page, not GPU72.

GPU72.com is a much better place to grab GPU work. It isn't necessary but it is certainly more suited.

The problem you were having is that GPU72.com has become the only relevant source of TF work so Primenet surrenders almost all the relevant TF work to it instead of handing it out on its own.

In a sense, GPU72 "owns" all the trial factoring work that is slated to be done in the next little while, and this is why you can't find any on Primenet. I think you have to set up an account there but it gets linked to your Primenet account. Then you can start grabbing work as you desire.

You are free to use your hardware as you desire, but know that every GPU is crippling its potential by doing anything other than trial factoring. In the same way, a CPU is wasting its own potential by trial factoring, so the CPU should do LL tests and the GPU should do trial factoring tests.

If you need help setting up your three GPU's to do TF work, let someone here know. There's a lovely program called MISFIT that I should probably use, but I don't. Someone else can help you with that.

I'd been doing TF assigned from mersenne but it chewed through each one in just a few seconds. I'd have to request 3000 to keep all 3 cards fed for a day. I got one as a test run from gpu72 and it seems it takes an hour or so. Be much more wieldy being able to grab 50 of those and just go for a few days.

Yeah those ones are for large exponents and they have little trial factoring. If you really wanted, you could reserve one exponent and trial factor multiple bit levels (say from 68 to 72) which would keep you occupied longer. But yes, the trial factoring to 74 bits for 70M exponents takes a couple of hours, and is actually much more efficient work.

So go from 68 to 74?
This was what I got out of my test run:
UID: tului/mfakto-r7-260x, no factor for M60777377 from 2^73 to 2^74 [mfakto 0.14-Win cl_barrett15_82_gs_2]

Having shot to the top 1000+ has made me much more interested in this. I've got about 200kwh a month free due to solar and subsidies so I can basically do this for free up to a limit.

Please keep in mind that GPU72 is focused on doing Trial Factoring (TF'ing) today which will be useful to GIMPS tomorrow.

As in, we are currently TF'ing candidates to as high as we can sustain to 73 or 74 "bits" before they are handed out for P-1'ing or LL'ing by Primenet. Doing TF'ing above 73M is pointless currently, except for the low 332M range (where some waste their time and money LL'ing without EEC naively hoping for glory and money).
