Default One PC Can't Connect to PrimeNet

Hello,

One of my computers is having a problem reporting results to PrimeNet.

The PC is set to do TF, finishing a project on an almost daily basis. But for a couple of days now, every 70 minutes it tries to submit its report and gets a message back reading:

"CURL library error: Could not resolve host: v5.mersenne.org: No data record of requested type"

Help! The number of exponents in reserve is running out. I'd like to solve this before the backlog is completely depleted.

Here is what I have done so far in the attempt to remedy the situation:

1. I moved the Ethernet cable to a different port on the router.

2. I plugged in a different cable.

3. I tried going to other sites on the Internet. It can, without any issues.

4. I checked the firewall. The settings for Prime95 are properly adjusted to allow it to communicate.

5. I shut down and restarted the computer, then relaunched Prime95.

None of this has helped. What else can I try?

Two more (hopefully useful) data points: The other PCs are reporting to PrimeNet normally; and I'm running Prime95 v25.11.2.

The only out-of-the-ordinary thing that's happened in the last few days is that we went away for a couple of days and I turned off the router, but left the PCs on and working on exponents. While that didn't seem to faze my Vista or XP systems, both of the Windows 98 PCs burped. The Win98 running Factor4 for OBD came to a complete halt while it waited for me to acknowledge that the DHCP lease had expired. (It resumed as soon as I clicked on OK.) This Win98SE system, though, didn't protest and indeed kept crunching numbers, but now I can't connect it to PrimeNet.

Any ideas as to how to fix things?

Thank you!

Rodrigo

Try going to Start>Run, typing in "ipconfig" and pressing Enter. That will give you the Win98 graphical IP management tool. If it says your IP address is "0.0.0.0" or if it gives something that looks like "169.x.x.x" or "167.x.x.x" (it's one or the other, I forget which--been a while since I used Win98), then it didn't get an IP address from your router like it was supposed to. In that case, press the "Renew" button to get a fresh DHCP lease.

mdettweiler,

Thanks for the idea. I tried it and did get the correct information back.

The computer is surfing normally; the only place that it seems it can't go is PrimeNet.

Default Problem Solved (?)

Well, I got rid of the problem by turning off the firewall (ZoneAlarm). Now the laptop is reporting normally.

However, this is of course not an optimal solution.

Any ideas, from those who know the Prime95 software, as to what may have been going on?

You might try re-installing or upgrading to a newer version of ZoneAlarm. It doesn't happen often, but I think ZoneAlarm could be blocking Prime95 from accessing the Internet without telling you that it is doing so. Re-installing or upgrading "should" reset ZoneAlarm's data base and cause it to start prompting you for permission again.

You can also sneaker net the prime.spl results file from your laptop to another PC that can communicate to the PrimeNet server and you can manually edit the worktodo.txt file to give your laptop more work to do. It is a pain to do it this way but it can be done.

RMAC9.5,

Hmm, interesting. I did suspect ZoneAlarm, but it claimed to have Prime95 within its allowed group, with green check marks. And the two programs (ZoneAlarm and Prime95) did work together fine up until we went away and I turned off the router for a few days.

I'm running the most recent version of ZoneAlarm that works on Win98. But I like your idea of reinstalling the software. I'll re-launch ZoneAlarm, and if it still doesn't work, then I'll uninstall it and reinstall it.

Thanks very much!
