Too bad the police are not like Andy instead of being like Barney.

Ah, yes, the motto of the Strategic Air Command, which had B-52's with payloads of nuclear bombs flying as close to Soviet air space as they dared.

Be it said, however, the Strategic Air Command actually was instrumental in maintaining the peace. We did not get into a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. The SAC was a major reason for this.

The SAC commanding officer was for some years General Curtis E. "Bombs away" LeMay, who had in WWII engineered the "fire raids" on Japan. General LeMay said after the war that, had we lost, he probably would have been tried as a war criminal. I believe that the character General Jack D. Ripper in Dr. Strangelove was to some extent inspired by him. He was George Wallace's vice-presidential running mate in 1968.

I had a neighbor for years who was retired Air Force. Served in Korea, flew planes all over creation. Later on he was on the administrative end of things. He had many interesting, sometimes amusing, stories. One of these was about the time he met some former Soviet officers. They told him that Curtis LeMay had been the one man they truly feared.

There is an additional measure of justice, delayed for decades, in the case last mentioned here in this October 5, 2020 post. Unfortunately, at the rate things are proceeding, those responsible for the miscarriage of justice who are still living, may die of old age before their day of reckoning arrives.

Judge declares Jackie Wilson innocent in Burge-related case, refers it for possible investigation by special prosecutor
Quote:
A man who served more than three decades behind bars for a 1982 cop killing was officially declared innocent Friday after years of alleging he was tortured and framed for a shooting his brother committed.

Jackie Wilson successfully proved that he was merely an innocent bystander as his brother, Andrew, killed two Chicago police officers, Cook County Judge William Hooks ruled.

But that won't bring an end to one of the strangest cases in Cook County — one involving an allegedly perjurous prosecutor, an international con man and a legacy of police violence involving notorious ex-Cmdr. Jon Burge.
Hooks referred the overall matter to Presiding Judge LeRoy Martin Jr. for him to consider appointing a special prosecutor who would investigate potential criminal wrongdoing by current or former prosecutors.

And Hooks made no secret of his belief that some should face consequences for what he saw as a horrendously botched prosecution.

"Some (prosecutors) venture into dirty, unethical (territory) … in a very small number of cases, they become criminals themselves," the judge said.

Julian Assange: Wikileaks founder extradition to US blocked by UK judge
Quote:
<snip>
District Judge Vanessa Baraitser ruled that while US prosecutors met the tests for Mr Assange to be extradited for trial, the US was incapable of preventing him from attempting to take his own life.

She outlined evidence of his self harm and suicidal thoughts and said: "The overall impression is of a depressed and sometimes despairing man fearful for his future."

She said: "Faced with the conditions of near total isolation without the protective factors which limited his risk at HMP Belmarsh, I am satisfied the procedures described by the US will not prevent Mr Assange from finding a way to commit suicide and for this reason I have decided extradition would be oppressive by reason of mental harm and I order his discharge."<snip>
There has been at least one suicide in the Supermax near Florence, CO. On September 7, 2013, an inmate named Robert Knott committed suicide by hanging himself. In 2016 the resulting lawsuit was settled for $175,000.00.

Amazingly (at least to me) this story is even covered by the Voice of America, Der Führer's efforts to turn it into his Ministry of Propaganda notwithstanding.
Quote:
U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla in Manhattan issued a preliminary injunction against the White House from imposing criminal or civil penalties against four law professors under an executive order from President Donald Trump last June.

Trump had authorized economic and travel sanctions against employees of the Hague-based ICC and anyone supporting its work, including an inquiry into whether U.S. forces committed war crimes in Afghanistan between 2003 and 2014.

Failla said the plaintiffs would likely succeed in showing that Trump's order unconstitutionally stifled their speech, resulting in irreparable harm.

"The court is mindful of the government's interest in defending its foreign policy prerogatives and maximizing the efficacy of its policy tools," Failla wrote. "Nevertheless, national security concerns must not become a talisman used to ward off inconvenient claims."

WikiLeaks founder Assange denied bail in UK
Quote:
LONDON (AP) — A British judge on Wednesday denied bail to WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange, ordering him to remain in a high-security prison while U.K. courts decide whether he will be sent to the United States to face espionage charges.

District Judge Vanessa Baraitser said Assange must remain in prison while the courts consider an appeal by U.S. authorities against her decision not to extradite him.

The judge said Assange "has an incentive to abscond" and there is a good chance he would fail to return to court if freed.
