How are the words 'button' and 'badge' used in the U.S.?

A 'button' is generally a round device, made from a stiff material. Smaller ones are used as fasteners. But advertising 'buttons' tend to be 3 cm to 5 cm, or so in diameter. They are typically produced as relatively large quantities of identical items.

On the orther hand, a 'badge' is typically a rectangular item which is usually personalized for the individual who will wear (or otherwise present) it as a means of identification.

Another type of 'badge' is given as a recognition award. These badges may be of cloth suitable for applique on a garment. Sometimes they are also called 'patches'.

Aned while this company http://www.badgeaminit.com/ is called Badge-a-mint, as is their product, they call what is produced a button.
