Default How often do you report ?

Just another little question. I know that the range I'm factoring will take quite some time. However, I can easily send part of the results to George before the rest ends. So, my question is :

How often do you guys send your results to George ?

Anything from once every week to once a month or even less. My guess is that processing those email results takes George some time even if very little since it's mostly automated. So, the fewer emails sent the better. Once a month seems to work okay for most.

Have you tried using the "Manual Test Results Check In" on http://mersenne.org/ips/manualtests.html?

You'll need to have a PrimeNet account, but that doesn't prevent you from reporting results not assigned by PrimeNet. You won't get PrimeNet credit (for non-PrimeNet-assigned work), but you'll still get GIMPS credit.

It'll save George from having to handle any e-mail at all.

I use it all the time.

You can do that ?

I thought you could only report results there that are actually in the PrimeNet range. I thought the other ranges weren't in the PrimeNet Database ?

The Manual Test Results Check In process doesn't care whether the results are for numbers in the current PrimeNet-assigned ranges. It just cares that the entries are formatted okay, which they will be if cut-n-pasted from your results.txt file.

Well, up to 79300000 they're somewhere in the PrimeNet database, even if not currently designated as available for assignment. When George opens a new range for PrimeNet assignments, he doesn't have to pump an actual list of the specific exponents to PrimeNet -- PrimeNet already knows about them.

I split the range from 60-69m into 500k chunks, each of which is taking about 3 weeks on a P3-550. Results are sent at the end of each "piece".

cheesehead,
I am not sure how the manual tests pages will react if we submit LMh results through it. Have you tried putting in say 500 results through the manual test pages? If yes, I would recommend using the manual test pages but if not, somebody better try this out.

Can you submit results to the Manual Test Results Check In page if the FactorOverride= option has been used? I thought PrimeNet & FactorOverride didn't mix well.

No, I haven't put 500 results through the manual test report page. I don't know how many it can handle at once, and I agree that someone should try, say, 10 then 20 then 40 then 80 before entering hundreds at once.

Yes. I've done it.

If I interpret the source code correctly, Prime95 module commonc.c ignores FactorOverride _if_ the user has selected the "Use PrimeNet to get work and report results" box checked in the "Configure PrimeNet" options.

AFAIK this is not because of any technical limitation, but because George wanted PrimeNet assignments to use the default limits for trial factoring (which I agree is a good idea). My guess is that his undoc.txt statement "This feature should not be used with the Primenet server" may have been left overly broad in order to discourage unknowledgable users from messing with default limits without good reason.

The results line for trial factoring doesn't say anything about whether or not FactorOverride has been used, and the default trial factoring limits have sometimes been changed between past versions of Prime95, so I don't think PrimeNet itself really cares or even knows.

I've put several hundred through the manual pages before... It takes PrimeNet a minute or two to digest them, but if you are patient it will work...

Of course, when I did that sometimes PrimeNet would mysteriously crash...

Nah, it didn't crash... (Now try pulling out 2000 exponents in a few minutes, with eight instances of Prime95 running, and it will!)

Hmm, it seems there are a couple of questions amongst lots of people about this issue.

I myself have sent in 2 reports of my factoring work up to now (factored 30.000.000-30.010.000 and 30.010.000-30.020.000 to 60 bits) but apparently I didn't get credit for it on my PrimeNet account yet. Furthermore I think the things you send in with the Forms must still be manually processed by George or someone else.

It would be nice if we can actually get a reply on this thread from George or whoever made the PrimeNet Server and the Manual Test Forms and scripts.

Axel Fox.
