Surely A001353, with all its derivative sequences (which include that used in the LL test). This is also quite possibly the most important sequence that has no name.

I can't seem to make links to OEIS sequences that work like those of others above. What's the secret?

Reading the manual and looking around I think that in the advanced editor there are some options to get the relevant url from a number, but one can just type the tags [m] and [oeis].
[m]M2[/m] and [oeis]0000001[/oeis] without the tags give M2* and 0000001.

* M2 Where one can see a strange result : 2019-04-18 THOMAS NF-PM1 B1=1000000, B2=100000000, E=12

Last fiddled with by S485122 on 2022-12-23 at 00:00 Reason: had to ad some tags to render ;-)

If you want to see how someone does something in their post, quote it. The underlying code will be revealed. You also could hover over the icons above your edit window and the tool tips will give you big hints as to what they do.

Judging from your posts, I would say it is because it would never have occurred to you that somebody else not only knows more about something than you do, but is willing to share it, and you have only to look. This also would explain why you referred to something offered in plain sight as a "secret."

In addition to the excellent suggestions already provided by slandrum, I will mention that there is considerably more detail about this sort of thing in the FAQ. As a timesaving tip, I suggest you search the FAQ for the word "tags" and click on "learn more about" links.

And some of those editor icons contain brief not-so-random text, such as 2^p-1, xkcd, oeis...

I wouldn't use the term 'favorite' OEIS sequence, either, but the originator of this thread saw fit to. That was the first one I thought of in that light, though.

And yes, _now_ I know about those icons for OEIS etc. having figured out where to look. Just because something is 'in plain sight' doesn't mean someone will notice, that's why we have the expression 'hide in plain sight'. "What's the secret?" is also idiomatic, and doesn't imply anything is being kept secret, more the contrary as you wouldn't expect to be told if it were actually secret. (This may be obvious but Dr. Sardonicus didn't seem to find it so.)

And it's something to note that the sequence of Mersennes just posted doesn't include the last 3 - while Sloane does include PRPs he isn't willing to risk missing terms, and we all know there's a small chance even though it's never happened before ...

And yet you have decided to post 4 times in this thread. 1 post of what is not your favourite is not enough. You need to comment ceaselessly in threads. Take the hint that others have given you. Read more, contemplate more, try to figure out people's real message, and post less. Read more, post less is general advice to new members of online communities. Get the feel for the place before telling people their business.

It's rather obvious why I posted 4 times; if I'd gotten the OEIS link right the first time it would have been only once, and I'm certainly welcome to comment once on the exact purpose of the thread! Whatever is meant by 'telling people their business' is not what I am doing.

Not necessarily.

All new participants are welcome. Sufficient misbehavior can make some unwelcome and bring consequences.
New forum participants frequently bring fresh perspectives and questions that can be beneficial, including in improving the reference info and other participants' understanding of the forum's subject matter, and contributing talent or knowledge.
Carry on as you have, Andrew Usher, disregarding or pushing back against moderators' guidance, or escalate what the moderators seek to discourage, and you may receive more of the possible responses available to the moderators. Some possibilities are:
blunt or harsh language directed at you, since the relatively gentle tactful wording demonstrated by Uncwilly and other mods so far seems not to be making a difference or only leading to increased posting in ego defense;
moderator responses either publicly or in PM using words like "warning";
modification or removal of unacceptable post content;
plain threats of temporary ban;
imposition of temporary ban;
imposition of subsequent longer ban;
permanent ban (rare, but it happens).

I understand the possibility of enthusiastic participation in a newly joined forum. But restraint is good. Please read and contemplate and apply all of MersenneForum Netiquette (the unwritten 'rules', documented) https://www.mersenneforum.org/showpo...00&postcount=1
Forum search indicates your first post here was Dec 6; you're averaging ~94/18 ~5 posts a day, which is higher than average, and higher than suggested frequency. Some moderator or other reads and evaluates each post anyone makes.

I might as well make this discussion here only; this thread has already run out its original purpose. It seems you do realise that I am posting in good faith.

I have been on the internet for thirty years, participated in countless discussions on a variety of topics, sent maybe a hundred thousand messages in all. But one thing I've never seen is any suggestion that I refrain from posting solely because of the number of posts I have made, a suggestion difficult to comply with, and not ordinarily something one ever checks; still I post less than if I sent everything that struck my mind to send. I have read the (unusually long) list of rules/guidelines you linked to - I do read everything, more or less - and though not contemplating each one in detail I don't see that I've intentionally violated any.

I'm not entirely sure who is a moderator here but my experience and judgement says that it should not matter in ordinary discussion as no one should be treated worse for not being one.

In any case, I don't think my long-term average rate of posting would exceed 2 per day if the forum stands as it does now. I must admit one contributing factor is the forum's mandatory 60 seconds between posts (I have not seen longer than 30 before), and my usual mode of posting and e-mailing is (and has been since the limit of my memory) composing a long list of messages offline, then sending them as fast as possible. It's been so long, but I think when I started this could be done automatically. Web-based mail and discussion have closed off that possibility, but trial shows that it still takes less of my time than the alternative.

Last, I see you have submitted a small (by your standards) P-1 run on MM31. Are you planning a stage 2? - I will have no criticism if you are not.

Actually I regard it as an open question.

I have mmff TF (intending to go to 91 bits) and a P-1 stage 2 running in parallel on different hardware. I may attempt another P-1 with larger B1 & B2 later.

Good grief, that was better left unwritten. I don't think anyone sane here is holding their breath over anyone else's reaction, much less a newcomer's like yourself.
It's known (because some participants have self disclosed) that some forum participants have maladies such as ADHD, Aspergers, dyslexia, OCD, etc. Most try to mitigate their own.

Re who's a moderator, search for "color" in https://www.mersenneforum.org/showpo...64&postcount=2
