Yeah. No.

I sometimes use wget when I want to test a source.

For browsers, I highly recommend "No Script". It's an add-on that gives you greater situational awareness.

I use uBlockOrigin and PrivacyBadger. Then I have a google account for the sole purpose of blocking tracking, search history and "relevant ads" and so. I do not use the possibilities "offered" by a Google account : no gmail, no cloud, ... I know it might be considered naïve to believe the privacy statements of Google, but it seems to work as stated.
Not showing the URL is an enormous increase in risk ... for those people analysing url's before clicking. Unfortunately most people don't even look at the URL, they just click.

I think that having an account defeats the purpose of no tracking.

IMO a better option would be to refuse cookies from all google sites (that includes doubleclick, analytics, etc.), and disallow google to run scripts to avoid the evercookies problem.

But the best option of all would be to simply blackhole google with hosts.

Facebook apologizes to users, businesses for Apple’s monstrous efforts to protect its customers' privacy
https://www.theregister.com/2020/08/...ebook_ios_ads/
Quote:
Facebook has apologized to its users and advertisers for being forced to respect people’s privacy in an upcoming update to Apple’s mobile operating system – and promised it will do its best to invade their privacy on other platforms.

The antisocial network that makes almost all of its revenue from building a vast, constantly updated database of netizens that it then sells access to, is upset that iOS 14, due out next month, will require apps to ask users for permission before Facebook grabs data from their phones.

“This is not a change we want to make, but unfortunately Apple’s updates to iOS14 have forced this decision,” the behemoth bemoans before thinking the unthinkable: that it may have to end its most intrusive analytics engine for iPhone and iPad users.

China now blocking HTTPS+TLS1.3+ESNI

Through the new GFW update, Chinese officials are only targeting HTTPS traffic that is being set up with new technologies like TLS 1.3 and ESNI (Encrypted Server Name Indication).

FT is paywalled but it's easy to find other versions of the story:

Musk-backed Neuralink unveils upgraded brain-implant technology | FT

Oh, great - so following the Tesla software paradigm, involuntary OTA software 'upgrades' at any time, remote-bricking capability for people's brains, and ready hackability. What could go wrong?

On the subject of brain implants, I recommend The Cerebrated Jumping Frog (short story by Don Tuite), Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact, November 1975.

The Russian government is working on updating its technology laws so it can ban the use of modern internet protocols that can hinder its surveillance and censorship capabilities.

According to a copy of the proposed law amendments and an explanatory note, the ban targets internet protocols and technologies such as TLS 1.3, DoH, DoT, and ESNI.

Remember the clipper chip farce https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_chip
An 80 bit key, ooh I feel SO secure. And key escrow entrusted to the same government that later developed FISA courts, and filed applications there based on known false information, while omitting valid exculpatory information.
