From Google Colab faq (https://research.google.com/colaboratory/faq.html)
"What is Colaboratory?
... especially well suited to machine learning, data analysis and education"

So for academic research. Prime sieving, hunting is not mentioned, or running the same code for million+ hours.
Maybe now it is cheaper if you'd buy a gpu.

Edit: and it is not subject of availability, either. Connecting remotely to a Malay server and from there to colab, with a fresh free account, immediately got a T4. So, it is just "you used it too much, fcuk off! we better keep it empty than give it to you, even if you paid for it".

LaurV has GPUs (& has said he has more than he can run). He's been outsourcing some of the waste heat load to Google. My situation is similar.

Strange that my account has not changed, I cannot see the "Premium" option and I cannot see how many compute units I have left.
But I do feel the effect of the compute units: I can only get 1 session per account and not for 24 hours, last one ran for 19 hours and I could not get another immediately.

Today, after a night of "pause and relax", I jumped in, hoping I could get some GPUs, but in fact, one account got two "CPU-only" sessions, and the other two just a single CPU-only session. Trying to get a second session fails with "too many sessions" blah blah. The "background execution" doesn't work in any of them. Disconnecting the browser got the notebook stopped, every time I tried. Note that these are all Pro+ accounts, where, at least, the two sessions and the background execution should be "guaranteed" (or... should they? the eula is not exactly clear). Think they put me on "free" tier

One may say something about "one user, one account" policy, but first of all, there is no such thing explicitly stated in their policy (but it is implied by the fact that you subscribe with google profile, need a telephone number, and payment profile in case of paid accounts), and second of all, all 3 accounts are for REAL persons hihi (no joke) - I don't have a lot of friends but still have two friends/family members who would let me screw their lives, and these persons will any time say they are using the accounts by themselves - the only caveat is that the accounts are all paid from the same credit card, mine

Joking apart, yeah, gugu changed something, which makes Colab less attractive for us. Nothing against the fact that they want to offer it for edu domain, and not for old farts hunting for numbers with no economic, social, etc importance. Their yard, their toys. My only argument is related to the fact that they changed the clauses o a contract in the middle, after we paid for it, and after it was running well for a while. Maybe they are realtives to putin or something...

About GPUs, yeah, I do have enough of them. More than I can run, indeed. Now, they even don't do mining, because the coins' price is low and the electricity is not really justified. I think however that Robert's question was more on the sarcastic side, pointing the fact that it is still cheaper to run Colab than to buy your own GPU. Which it is. He can correct me, if that was not his intention, but yeah, paying 10k to 15k bucks (American!) for a V100 or A100, plus the electricity tu run it for a year or three, well... it still can be cheaper to play with gugu. Except when you still pay the money and get nothing...

Haha, thanks for sharing that, putting all my house-related numbers there, it says that "buying is cheaper if you stay for 14.2 years or longer, otherwise renting is cheaper" - I live in this (rented) house for 21 years exactly - moved in in 2001, October.

So, making a big loss here...

Unfortunately the calculator does not take into account the endless meanders a farang has to go through, to buy fixed property in Thailand (as opposite to mobile property, as a car, which you can buy quite easy).

I hadn't been able to get a GPU on one of my accounts for ~36 hours and now I got a T4 for 3 hours.... I cancelled by Pro+ subscription.
My other account renews on Oct 16th, so I'll wait and see if there is any improvements before that.

On one of my 2 unpaid Colab accounts I have not seen a GPU in about a week (but have been getting 2 concurrent sessions, which is a change). On the other, no problem, T4 all the time.
