Default Cuba/ USA unfrozen relations

So yes, it seem that that bit of the cold war is finnally thawning.
How many of you are tempted to go to Cuba now?

I thought that you could for years now, and legally, too. You'd have to use a licensed operator, like Insight Cuba.
But now it will be probably much easier.

One reason to go could be the music.

P.S. Russia could be soon the new Cuba. Travel there before the iron curtain drops again, well, and the appalling poverty and crime sets in. If you travel now, you could be treated to the sights of appalling luxury (a feast in time of plague). :sardonic smile:

About.Damned.Time.

Talk about your US foreign policy being held hostage by the smallest minority of voters mainly in and around Miami...

Of course I don't blame the GOP for pandering to the only sliver of the Hispanic community that doesn't fear them...

While the warmongers in DC are busy trying to start Cold War v2.0 with Russia, alas.

I'm sure Cuba would be a great place to visit (except for the US-occupied portion, that is) - lovely people, lovely culture.

We have talked about going there ever since we saw people lining up at Cancun International to make the 20-30 minute hop to Cuba. Music, architecture, classic US cars, scenery, and many more are attractions.

EDIT: And YES! It is about effing time this stupid relic ends.

I went in 2008 - a year after Fidel stepped aside, just as it was getting popular with tourists from the UK. Great architecture, great music and dance (ok that last one sort of went over my head). Food was unexceptional. I drank alot of Cuba libres.

There were a few americans there even then.

I got some sense that the old guard were trying to keep the memory of the revolution going though there weren't many people left that still bought into it: most people were waiting on normalisation of relations with the US. They had another seven years to wait.

Interesting tidbit about JFK's engaging in a bit of "insider trading" ahead of his signing into law the 1962 Cuba trade embargo in Mish's piece on the normalization of relations (except for that little piece of Guantanamo Bay real estate, mind you):
Quote:
The day before Kennedy signed the law, "Kennedy ordered an aide to buy him 1,000 Petit Upmanns cigars. It was only after Kennedy got word that his request had been carried out that he authorised the new regulations that banned Cuban imports and would have made the purchase illegal."
"It's good to be the King..."

This echoes the widespread phenomenon of the well-heeled and politically connected filling their cellars with booze in advance of Prohibition, with the added family connection -- if there is truth to the long-running rumors to this effect -- of a nice chunk of the Kennedy clan's family fortune having been made by Papa Joe's large scale liquor-smuggling-from-Canada operation during the ensuing "dry spell".

Just wondering- why the Lounge for this, and not Soapbox? It seems like a message of some sort for it to be here.

EDIT: But I really am just curious.

Maybe they can start blaming the Puerto Ricans...
