Default Move 1

They have opened 1.d4.

With davar55 probably away through January 7 our move will, I guess, be delayed at least until after that date. But I thought I'd start a thread for our first move already.

The two most common replies for Black are 1...Nf6 (very flexible and can lead to almost any QP opening), and 1...d5 which will often lead to the Queen's Gambit or to general closed QP openings if White refrains from playing c4.

Some other possibilities are 1...e6 (can transpose to the French defence if White plays 2.e4, or otherwise flexible), 1...d6 or 1...g6 (which invite the Pirc/Modern defence if White plays 2.e4, or in any case heading for a quick kingside bishop fianchetto), 1...f5 (Dutch defence, counterattacking but can be dubious positionally), 1...c5 (a type of Benoni), and one or two other rare, miscellaneous moves.

What are our individual preferences then? I'll state mine at some point later, but I'm flexible anyway. I've played most of the moves I listed above at some point in my own games, with the exception of the Dutch 1...f5.

I've pretty much played then all at one time or another. Always found
d5 leading to a draw more often than not, howeve Nf6 never ended in
a draw either a won or a loss.

I'm back for a time.

I agree about d5 response tending to draw, and it's what I have played most often (which is
still not that often). But I like this Nf6 suggestion, seems intuitively better than any other
pawn move than d5, AFAICS. So I'll go with that, until further discussion.

I'll come out in favour of 1...Nf6 as well.

I agree with Nf6. Didn't need to sleep on it.

I see we're at 1. d4 ... Nf6

If they move 2. c4 what do we respond? Or should we wait for their
second move first? I think it's your decision...

How much activity / interest is going on about this game in the
public threads? We're blind to it ....

We'll certainly have a crucial decision to make at move 2 if they play 2.c4.
There are two very different types of game to go for:
(1) Play 2...e6 and go for Nimzo-Indian/Queen's Indian/Queen's Gambit style openings.
(2) Play 2...g6 (or, more unusually 2...c5) and go for King's fianchetto openings - King's Indian, Gruenfeld, Benoni.

Do you two have a clear preference between these two styles?

No idea. We probably can't know unless we ask the spectators, and that's ethically a bit dubious. It's all supposed to be hidden from us.
