Ive been running Prime95 for a few weeks now on both my P4 and both processors of my other computer. I noticed yesterday that after running on my p4 for over a day i was doing what i beleve was the LL test on M16602191 and it was up to about 13% done i had to shut down for the night so did the advanced, quit GIMPS then selected No (is this the right way to close down..?) then i receved the following message.
[Thu Feb 06 01:33:58 2003 - ver 22.12] Unreserving exponent 16602191 ERROR 17: Exponent not assigned to this computer. Then this morning when i log back on i get. How can i stop this from hapening or is this the way its supposed to be working as i dont ever seem to compleate anything , just keep starting new things. Any information on this would be most greatfull as i want to be doing the most i can. |

Hi Hellfire,
the correct way to shut down Prime95 is to choose Exit in the Test-Menu. The Quit GIMPS option in the Advanced-Menu is to inform the Server that you don't want any further candidates to test. :( Prime95 sets "NoMoreWork=1" in the prime.ini file to indicate this. I don't think that this Flag is set, as you got a new Exponent to test. The :arrow: undoc.txt file has more information on prime.ini entries you can set to control Prime95's behaviour. The Online-Help gives you details on the Menus, the math and other things related to Prime95 and GIMPS. If you want to finish the unreserved Exponent, you should email to George at woltman@alum.mit.edu and ask him to rereserve it for you. Hope this helps you. Cheers and crunch on, Benjamin |

You can also do just a plain Windows shutdown. Prime95 will save the intermediate work files and on restart will pick up from the last iteration done before the shutdown.
But, as every GIMPS participant should do, the best thing is to leave your PC on 24/7: it won´t get tired. Just turn off the monitor. 8) |

Benjamin is right. Unfortunately you selected the option to quit GIMPS the project itself. So the number you were working on was unreserved and by now has probably been assigned to someone else. But fortunately, all you results from before have been saved. BTW, looking at your results file, it seems that you are only doing P-1 testing. That is the initial part of LL testing. The actual LL test usually will take about 5-10 days on a fast P4. How long does it take for you?

Not sure on the timings as i was quitting not stopping each time but atm for each 10000 itteration on the LL test is around 0.059 seconds on my p4 2000. On My p2 450's its around 0.250 for double checking, thats on each processor on my duel setup.

Actually, since he is in Team_Prime_Rib, the exponent cannot be unreserved on PrimeNet (since the Mr. X episode). But it has been removed from his worktodo.ini. Checking the TPR team report, I can see that it is indeed still checked out to helfire. You can add it back to your worktodo.ini just by editing it. The correct entry is:
Test=16602191,65,1 Unfortunately, the save file may have been deleted, but if it hasn't, you'll pick up right where you left off. |

The timings reported by Helfire are not low, for a P4 2000 and for the range under consideration. For a 16M exp a 896K FFT is used, and it´s normal per iteration values of around 0.050-0.054 secs. For an 18M, 1024K FFTs are used and the value jumps to 0.055 to 0.059, depending on the type of memory. If you are referring your values to the same range, I would say that your values are way too high. May be you are running other programs that are stealing CPU cycles from P95. |

I'm used to running 33,000,000+ exponents - 1792k FFT range. I keep forgetting most other folks don't. 9-) |
