Default Athlon 64

I've been hearing about the new Athlon 64 processor expected to come out next month and I was wondering what everyone else knows about it.

If you do a Google search on "Athlon 64" (include the quotes) you'll find LOTS of speculation and some real info buried in the noise.

Or you could start with AMDZone - they seem to have plenty of links and articles, and tend to be biased towards accuracy more than some of the other sites I could mention (like Tom's Hardware, which USED to be a good site but has been pretty pathetic for a couple years now IMO).

http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/amd-hammer-family/ has a very detailed overview.

And http://www.amdzone.com/ did a lot of Opteron reviews (in article section).

So what happens if you "run p95tst, do Advanced/Time 20000000, and post the strange timer results in results.txt" (http://www.mersenne.org/gimps/p95tst.zip)

Should be the same as the Opteron numbers, but since there's going to be a lot more Athlon64's out there than Opterons maybe it's good to do a sanity check to be perfectly sure it's the same.

Athlon64 might NOT have the same timings as an Opteron - the 939/940 pin Athlon64's should, as they basically are Opterons, but the 754 pin Athlon64's have a different memory controller / interface and should differ somewhat.

Sanity check IS a good idea, though - might take a while, as Opterons and Athlon64s aren't very common yet.

GP2,
I would have checked, but unfortunately I don't have access to the machine anymore

@Quintleo:
Currently all 64bit chips from AMD use the same core. That's why all of them have 1MB of L2 cache and a 193sqmm die.

The main difference besides number and kind of HT channels are the memory channels:

A64 - single channel DDR

Opteron/AFX with 940 pins - dual channel (128bit from one address) DDR ECC SDRAM

AFX with 939 pins - dual channel (probably 2x 64bit from different addresses) DDR SDRAM
