Since a poll can't be added to this thread.
Simple poll. When will the first 100,000,000 digit long prime number be found, any type, by anyone? For the sake of things, assume that it can be verified within a reasonable time frame. Posts by RD Silverman are very welcome in this thread. Last fiddled with by Uncwilly on 2008-09-17 at 21:28 |

Hm, doesn't this thread bear a striking resemblance to this thread here?
http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=10652 Edit: Nevermind, ignore this, this one has a poll and the other doesn't (the first post didn't say that when I first posted). Last fiddled with by Mini-Geek on 2008-09-17 at 21:53 |

Not necessarily. If it's a k*2^n+-1 with a large k, the exponent could be quite a bit smaller. If it's a completely different form, including k*b^n+c with a b>2, the exponent could be much smaller.

But even if not, knowing the Mersenne exponent equivalent is useful for comparison purposes. Obviously the exponent of a Mersenne prime need not correspond at all to the exponent of a prime of a different form. |

Ha. I'm going to find a 100M digit non-mersenne k*b^n±c prime just to spite everyone.
