Huh. And Croatia just had a smaller quake a day or two ago. Magnitude 5 IIRC. I remember looking at a pic of some minor damage. I think it was in Zagreb.

And now a major quake.

It might be a coincidence, that that wouldn't be my default assumption.

Default Seismic activity,

Living only 20 km from the earthquakes activity where the America and Europe "flakes" are moving as speaking. We wait for the 6 or 6.5 bang. The written history and older data says this ends with estimated 6 or 6.5 on Richter scale. What is unusual is the magnitude over a year period and specially last two weeks. The amount in magnitude last year period is equal to what was expected for 10 years period. (and there was one 4.8 as I am typing)

Here is the detailed info about the activity now:

Iceland. I have heard of the Reykjanes Ridge before. Plate tectonics in action. I knew about volcanic activity, but not earthquakes.

Strong earthquake shakes central Greece, felt in Balkans
Quote:
ATHENS, Greece (AP) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of up to 6.3 struck central Greece on Wednesday and was felt as far away as the capitals of neighboring Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. Local officials reported some structural damage, mainly to old houses and buildings that saw walls collapse or crack.

Now there are expected volcano eruption in the next hours (24 hours). Probably only lava floating on the surface like rivers but not heavy explosions eruption. More likely as for tourist attraction (without any tourists)

I just looked at an animated wind map for the North Atlantic Ocean here. If this pattern holds, and it is expected to, any volcanic ash would be carried down the east coast of North America. Ash and jet engines do not get along well, as everyone knows. I suspect all major air carriers are paying very close attention.
