Default Don't know where installation folder went

Tried installing v25.9 to a new computer, running Vista, a few days ago. Downloaded to desktop, then clicked prime95.exe. Ran normally for the day; but when I restarted the computer, client didn't start at bootup. Couldn't find the save files; a search for 'worktodo' in all locations turned up nothing. All I could find was the zip file that I had downloaded; clicking on it started the client again; with no memory of its assignments.

The problem seems to be that I don't know where the installation went, and Windows search is not helping.

Do an advanced search, include all places and hidden and non indexed folders. Another thing : via advanced find you can search for a file name, this is unlike the standard search that searches for a string of text in some directories and the content of some files.

You will probably find the files in "c:\program data\Prime95" or "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Prime95".

An quick alternative : open a command prompt and execute

cd \
dir /s worktodo.txt

It works even if there are hiden folders on the way...

So...you ran Prime95 from the .zip? It probably put the worktodo.txt, etc. files in the same folder it was, which is most likely the temp folder. Check your temp folder (Start > Run > %TEMP% > OK is one way to get to it). Try to find prime95.exe or its config files in that folder or one of its subfolders. Or just do the exact same thing again, (run Prime95 like you did before) and see where it puts prime95.exe (try in Task Manager, right click on the process, Open File Location).

Anyway, whether you find the old stuff or not, you should unzip Prime95 (along with the .txt files packaged with it, if you want) to a folder outside of Program Files, (e.g. C:\Prime95\ or C:\Program Data\Prime95\) and run it from there.

seems like you skipped a step where you extract the files from the zip package. perhaps you ran prime95.exe dirctly from the zip file. not sure what happens to all the created files then.

You were right, Mini-Geek. I tried running prime95.exe from the zip file again and the data went into the Temp folder. No sign of the previous files there; I'm presuming it got deleted. A couple of days of work lost...

Note to self: Unzip first next time.

Another installation snafu - didn't think it was worth its own thread so apologies for tacking on to this one.

Have just re-built my PC - new mobo etc. After installing mprime it fired up as ANONYMOUS and reserved 2 DCs. I stopped that, restored my old/partially complete LL stuff and am continuing the LL assignments I was busy with.

Except ANONYMOUS has 2 DCs reserved that will never get any horsepower from me - can someone unreserve them please?

Done.
Wasn't too hard. Just had to copy/paste those lines into Prime95, communicate (so it'd register them as mine), then unreserve them through the site.

Cheers - learn something new everyday. Didn't realise by merging the todo file could 'shift' the ownership to my real user.

Yup, the assignment keys you gave were the key (no pun intended). Without it, the server would surely not have accepted the reassignment (and subsequent unreservation).

I have a similar problem. I did unzip to a separate folder and then ran the prime95 exec. It ran fine but it not not install the program. The application does not start at bootup only manually. How to fix?

Check Options > Start at Bootup.
