For internet chess there are several major international communities.
I was a member of http://www.chessclub.com/ for a long time but I currently play at http://www.chess.com/ . I would recommend both of them. I also tried http://play.chessbase.com/js/apps/playchess/ a few months ago but found that less enjoyable and then found my account blocked for no reason which was explained to me. |

chessmaniac.com has some good teams which encourage learning.

IMO, the best kind of chess club is the one with which you bonk your opponent over the head when you realize you are losing.
[Cue short of Bugs Bunny keeping the hungry-but-not-very-bright lion from eating him by whipping up a tea-for-two tableau, holding the sugar bowl out in one hand (giant wooden mallet behind back in other) and asking, "One lump or two?"] |

For learning, Houdini and Fritz are good computer based games which provide you with an approximate ELO rating. If you ever travel to NYC, play a few games in Washington Square.
I would also recommend learning to play GO. Again, this is warfare on a board but woven through with additional complexity. |
