requesting permission from George to release Prime95 screenshot under GPL

Although most of the source code for Prime95 is publicly available, it is technically not free (as in "free beer") software because of the prize distribution terms (if Prime95 was truly free software, then users could claim the EFF prize directly, but that's not the point of this post).

Anyways, I am planning to add the attached screenshot to the Wikipedia article on Prime95. The English Wikipedia accepts non-free images provided that there is a good reason for it. However, I would like to upload it to Wikimedia Commons so that it could be used on other wikis. The problem is, Wikimedia Commons does not accept any non-free material. Therefore, I am requesting permission to upload the below image under the GPL.

You created the screen shot, right? The most recent license that I have for Prime95 makes no claim about restricting the screen output.

A bit monotone don't you think? Some workers with different type of assignments could fit better. Just my two pence... And maybe some exponents that won't be all of them traceable to the same person

George, I assume you're OK with all of the other images? If not, I can nominate them for deletion.

Uh-oh... the screenshot I uploaded to Wikimedia Commons was deleted due to copyright issues. The admin who deleted it said that there was "no valid free license" for the software: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/C..._quad-core.png

I made a request to restore the file, but the request was denied. It seems Wikimedia Commons is very strict about copyright because George saying "Go for it" apparently isn't explicit enough to be taken as permission: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/inde..._quad-core.png

George: apologies for bothering you again about this, but could you please explicitly confirm that users may publish Prime95 screenshots under any free license, including public domain?

Perhaps the best solution is to change the EULA to allow users to freely modify and distribute screenshots of GIMPS software, and use them for any purpose.

That screenshot in the first post also contains some MS Windows components (the close button, etc.). Do we also need to ask MS for permission to post that?

And the font used might be under some other license to another company. Do we need to ask permission for that?

It all seems a bit ridiculous on WPs part. What's the big deal anyway?
