i have been running 24.14 on a laptop for a few months with no troubles.
it was set up to do primality tests only, but its slow (apparently) and i figured after this one finished it would be better to run factoring. so i went to "type of work to request from server" , unchecked primality and checked factoring. even though it wasnt finished with the primality test, it got a couple factoring jobs, and promptly began crashing with the windows window (send error report etc.). whats up with this? any suggestions? its about halfway through a primality test, and i dont want to lose the work. thanks, mark |

Try to use Tweak UI or Process Explorer to view running processes
Can download here <URL removed, I'm wary of URLs posted by new users. Sorry. Google "TweakUI" finds it easily. Alex> Last fiddled with by akruppa on 2008-04-28 at 09:34 |

Most likely the laptop has got dusty. Vacuum the vents.
If you do not have sufficient RAM for factoring, it is possible the disk is being used for extra memory and is causing too much extra heat. Last fiddled with by paulunderwood on 2008-04-28 at 01:56 |

everything else is fine; i will try cleaning it out etc., but it crashes right away, even when turned off for a while (so not apparently heat related) |

Download and run memtest86+. If you download the CD version, use your burning sofware's ISO option.
You will need to boot memtest instead of Windows -- there should be a special key -- maybe [F11] or [Esc]-- that you press when the laptop is switched on to allow you to select the boot media. Quote:

Did you run metest86+?
Do you run XP? Is it fully patched up? Do you have all malware protection software patched up? Have you scanned with these? What is you laptop make and model? In its BIOS, what are the temperature and voltage readings? |
