I parse Rodrigo's message as
"that is, doing LL almost exclusively" (stop)
"instead of TF on highly productive graphics cards" (the latter of course is implied to produce a lot of credit).

They do, what I could do with 1000 GTX 580s...

How about invoking Mr. Creosote? "57,885,161 twos, all mixed up in a bucket ... and don't skimp on the paté."

LOL, according to Wikipedia, that scene even had Quentin Tarantino feeling nauseated.

[I recall experiencing a distinctly odd mix of nausea and hilarity ... somewhat reminiscent of watching Clockwork Orange.]

Reminds me of a George Carlin quote (NSFW), or two.

But those are a bit coarse for this fine audience, so here's the third one (on the topic that there's a large one):

The site also mentions "About 100 computers [which] are running the program in personal homes and in different faculty and staff offices across campus...."

This suggests that they are pushing 1000 machines. That's quite a few idle cycles, even if they only run for a few hours now and then. It also explains how the occasional assignment gets stalled without anyone noticing.

You parsed it correctly.

Thanks, that was very interesting.

The numbers for participating PCs given there are probably even higher now, as the date given is 1/13/2009. I remember when I first joined GIMPS, curtisc accounted for about 800,000 Ghz-days in the previous year, and now they're up over 1.9M. They may also have upgraded a lot of PCs since then...

I wonder if Perfectly Scientific, Inc. is still going to produce those Mersenne prime posters. It would be sad if the tradition ended with Dr. Crandall's passing.
