Default Mathworld Reports M42 Before mersenne.org!

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/news/2005-02-26/mersenne/

www.mersenne.org

However, it seems that the discoverer still hasn't been announced.

EDIT: Slashdot has it too. I guess its only a matter of time before the big press release comes.

How many digits does it have? (How can I calculate that?)

Suppose we have the Mersenne number

(2^p) - 1

To get the number of digits, calculate

p * log base 10 of 2

then round up

No problem.

Interestingly, Google already lists 7230 results for "42nd Mersenne Prime" but no results for 25964951.

Also, someone on Slashdot commented that we can finally build a 50 Mbit RSA key

EDIT: It looks like Mr. Caldwell has found the identity of M42's discoverer:

Since the information has leaked out I've hurriedly updated the mersenne.org web site. I hope I got all the places that needed updating.

We're hoping Dr. Nowak's local paper will carry a story soon. I do not expect a big press splash as our third prime in 15 months will seem rather commonplace to the press which cannot fathom the enormous difficulty in finding these big primes!

Congratulations everyone, you guys form one amazing prime hunting machine!

The "eye surgeon in Michelfeld, Germany" link is dead.

That's because there's a www.mersenne.org "prefix" attached to it. The correct URL is

http://www.augenzentrum.biz/

which is a German website, as espected.

I'm sure Mr. Woltman will fix that link, as well as http://www.mersenne.org/25964951.htm when more time is available.

Again, congratulations Dr. Nowak

In addition, a very minor change, on some pages, the top centre link to the home page still says "May 2004..."

And I also would like to change the reference to Glucas program to an updated link to my server

Enjoy this weekend of success!.

Yeah, I had a feeling once the information was leaked there would be no way to contain the spread. Information flow almost propagates like a virus.
