I'm using Mprime 24.13 on Windows XP SP2. Sometimes, it just stops running and XP in its infinite wisdom does not delete tray icons of dead apps until you mouse over it. Thus, for days, it could have been dead. I'm pretty sure this also happens on 24.12.
Since this happens what seems like weekly, I finally decided to look at event viewer and found a few Dr. Watson dumps, here is one: Quote:
My normal usage patterns involve me sleeping the machine and it sometimes auto-hibernates after 3 hours of sleep. Sometimes, Windows fails to hiberate with a "not enough resources to complete API message." I'm not sure if this has anything to do with Mprime crashing, but it is just a feeling. I can test more when the error occurs, but am looking for other suggestions for testing and crash management. |

Veggiespam, what other programs are you running on this PC? At first blush, this sounds like a resource leak, where one of the programs allocates memory that it does not free.

Why would a resource leak in another application kill of mprime? It is only mprime that dies.
I discovered that if I did not iconify it to the tray icon and just ran it in a window, it would continue to run for weeks. Once as a tray icon, it returned to the crashing for an unknown time or reason. Nothing else I run just seems to die. Anyone seen this? |

Disable sleep and hibernate and enable power off moniter after xxx time
hibernate and sleep cause issues because it in essance shuts the computer down by A. copying memory to harddisk and then turning off everything or B. writeing everything to memory and then shutting off power to everything else unused. This could be your cause. Could we get a list of programs running on this machine. |

A resource leak seems unlikely. Have you tried a torture test? If you are having hardware problems it could result in random crashes.

no tests performed. but, i run it throttled so cpu is only 75%. and it only seems to die while a task tray icon, not as a window. i switched from LL to factoring a few months ago and it has made no difference
i'll run the torture test soon and report results. thanks all. |

I had one other user report occasional crash bug when trial factoring and prime95 was trying to restart when the laptop was plugged into AC power.
IIRC, I could not reproduce the trouble. |

It seems that somesort of upgrade to my machine has fixed the issue. It no longer crashes on hibernate or sleep. The joys of not knowing what is going on.

Go figure, after a month of no crashing (the day after I report it), kaboom. *sigh*

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I am having a similar sort of problem. I have used Prime95 with hibernating in the past on a PC without problems, but I am having trouble with my new laptop.
In Prime95, I have it set to stop running when on battery power. The program seems to crash when the laptop goes to sleep in one state (ie on battery or ac power) and wakes up in another (ie switches from what it was before). I haven't tested all the different combinations, but it definitely crashes when it goes to sleep on battery and wakes up after being plugged in. The error I get is "The instruction at "0x005c4338" referenced memory at "0xffffffff". The memory could not be "read".". The program does not crash when doing this if I have set it to keep Prime95 running on battery power. I have a Dell Latitude 610, and I am using a docking station (although it crashes even if plugged in outside of the docking station). This is on ver 24.14 on WinXP Professional SP2. Thanks, Jonathan |
