Due to lack of foresight it doesn't support octics. max is degree 6 I think.

Octic-280... interesting. Of course this number doesn't have a quartic, but there has been a bit of discussion this year about where the quartic/octic crossover might lie, especially with regard to long-standing Cunninghams such as 2,1180+ (diff 285 with quartic or octic) and 2,2350M (diff 283). Apparently the NFS@home BOINC-ified linux sievers can't handle octics, else we would likely have more relevant data.

If this turns out to be reasonably feasible, it would be good news for the prospects of tackling said Cunninghams. The two I mentioned above may even be easier than 10,1050L due to the much smaller coefficients.

[careful parameter selection and test-sieving is really important for octics - the algebraic side is much larger than the rational, and yield drops off very quickly with special-q]

Here is an octic that worked just fine.

The Windows BOINC sievers work fine on octics, and the Linux tasks error out. On small jobs like this that isn't an issue. For the 16e v5 queue, which often only sieves one number at a time for weeks, that would be a major problem.
