I just noticed the link at the bottom of the page. Does this mean Mersenneforum.org endorses this type of mockery? Is it in any way pertinent to the pursuit of prime numbers?

As a Christian, I must say that I'm bothered by it, and I would prefer not to see it promoted by a site I enjoy visiting based on an interest in mathematics and computer science and not religion.

Are you denigrating the views of those who support the ideal of Electronic Freedom? I thought one of the tenets of the Christian churches in general and its founder in particular was tolerance for those who do not fully accord with your customs and social expectations.

Hey Paul,

Not at all.

It's not my intention to be confrontational. I don't have any problem with anyone expressing his or her personal opinion. However, this forum appears to be hosted for the purpose of mathematical collaboration, and for such a site to express a religious or political affiliation seems out of place, especially since some (if I may speak for others) may not share the same viewpoint.

Note that I'm not saying it shouldn't be allowed. Just that if the site administrators (and I have no idea who that is) want to be sensitive to its members' opinions, they may want to reconsider that link and instead express their opinions in a thread, where their statements are perceived as their own rather than as being affiliated with the site in general.

Forgive me for bringing it up. I mistakenly believed a certain level of professional courtesy was desired in these forums.

It is - but a semblance of a sense of humor never hurts, either.

I'd like to add this:

Drew, you called FSM a "mockery." Pastafarians everywhere will be offended by this statement. It once started as a mockery not of Christian belief in general, but specifically of the "Intelligent Design" advocates trying to bring religious teachings into science classes. But it since evolved into a belief held dear by a great many people, and as far as I can see is just as well-founded and -justified as any other religion. Plus, Flying Spaghetti Monsterism has the added benefit that, as far as I know, no-one has been murdered in its name so far.

Drew,

In reference to FSM's having started as a mockery of Intelligent Design:

If a significant sector of a religion sets out to not only deny a scientifically well-established reality (be it Earth revolving around Sun, or evolution), but also to impose this denial on children and other people, then the remaining sectors of that religion would do well to persuade the errant sector to abandon its attempt to deny and suppress truth, lest ridicule of the errant sector spread to become ridicule of the entire religion.

Humans have enormous capacity for self-deception. The scientific method is designed to try to avoid that self-deception in the search for truth; religion is not structured for that same avoidance.

Drew,

In other words (unfortunately) they don't care. Some people find mocking humorous (especially when what they are mocking is [to them] a hilarious strawman version of what the person they are mocking believes), others just enjoy poking holes in bad arguments, and some don't like doing any of the above.

As long as this message board allows discussions on religion, there will be hate-speech, ignorant comments from young posters, and about twice as many opinions as there are posters. It is a difficult question: when does hate speech mean one should depart company? If this message board had derrogatory comments about blacks, would it be good to stick around and just ignore those comments? My personal opinion is that while some of the mod's here might hold some upsetting opinions (or ideas of humor), there are plenty of other posters who do not, and we can do mathematics together (in, yes, a less than ideal setting).

Some of us enjoy mockery which is at least one of humorous and clever.

Personally, I regard Intelligent Design as a clever mockery of evolution theories. I don't find it particularly humorous per se but I undoubtedly find wit and humour in its construction and conclusions.

It has all the required characteristics of a clever satire, including a good proportion of the structure of the subject being mocked and clever use of that subject's vocabulary. It also has wild extrapolations barely supported, if supported at all, by the evidence and throws in a few assumptions of its own for which there is little or no evidence.

If you can't find humour in satires on your own beliefs you are either unduly sensitive or regrettably humourless.
