Default Large memory usage

Specs:
Ubuntu 10.04 64bit
AMD Phenom X4 (2.2GHz quad core)
4GB DDR2 RAM

Problem:
When I setup mprime, I told it that it could have 512 MB of RAM day and night. I never expected it to use that much, but it recently began using very large amounts of memory (700 MB). I leave my computer running 24/7 and the problem has not fixed itself over the last 3 days. Does anyone have an explanation for why it is doing this and way to fix it (so that it doesn't use anymore than the 512 that I allocated it).

Just try setting it to 350mb or so. It should still work fine and should be close then. The 512mb setting is for the P-1 stage 2. If you are doing LL tests then it should spend most of the time not using more than 100mb. It would only be doing P-1 stage 2 for a few days out of a month or two depending on just how fast your machine is.

The first question is: what type of GIMPS assignment are you running when your system exhibits this behavior? (Trial factoring, LL first-check, DC double-check, P-1 or ECM?)

For some types, your system behavior might not be unusual.

BTW the 512MB is for the main large data structures only, not including any of the misc memory for code or smaller data areas.

But only during P-1 stage 2 or ECM stage 2, not during L-L.

Okay.

The LL first-check assignment might run a TF or P-1 before the actual Lucas-Lehmer test. Have you seen any messages about "factoring" or "P-1" being in progress?

BTW even when P-1 is finished it may still use large memory because of this bug:
