They were probably spamming each other - with enigmatic messages, of course.

The first one has already been broken: http://www.bytereef.org/m4-project-first-break.html

Doesn't sound like spam to me...

Oh, sure, on the surface (pardon the pun ;) this looks like a routine stringified message from a U-Boot captain:

Quote:
vonvonjlooksjhffttteinseinsdreizwoyyqnnsneuninhaltxxbeiangriffunterwasser
gedruecktywabosxletztergegnerstandnulachtdreinuluhr
marquantonjotaneunachtseyhsdreiyzwozwonulgradyachtsmystossen
achxeknsviermbfaelltynnnnnnooovierysichteinsnull
But recovering the font-colorization of the original Enigmail (which I happen to have handy in my, um, coat pocket - yeah, that's the ticket...) shows that it's a typical boner-popping-pill spam:

The more things change, the more they stay the same...

I'm surprised that a german submarine captain spreads spam in english. Did he anticipate that the Allies intercept and decrypt the message?
