I have been running an assignment on one of my laptop, wish to continue it on a different laptop. So how do I transfer the assignment?

Copy your Prime95 folder to the new machine. The Save Files it contains will allow the assignment to continue. (Don't put P95 in Program Files, if you are running Windows.)

What's the reasoning for not doing this? I've done it on a few of my machines, and haven't noticed any ill effect, but it sounds like there is a potential problem with doing so?

Since Vista, Windows by default restricts write access to Program Files. It redirects writes to another folder (somewhere in \Users, don't remember exactly) and uses that as the working directory, so the folder under Program Files doesn't contain actual current data.

Hmmmm... I wonder if Windows 10 handles it differently. I've had my Prime95 folder in Program Files since the beginning, but haven't had any issue. My worktodo.txt file stays up to date, etc.

If you run with UAC off and your account is a member of the Administrators group, you will have no problems writing in the most of the sub-folders of Program Files.
Standard security settings do not grant members of the Users group change rights in sub-folders of the Program Files, Program Files (x86) and ProgramData folders (and that is one of the reasons why ransomware and other malware not granted administrator rights has few effects and can easily be removed.) Of course it is possible to change the security settings on the folder you put Prime 95 in.

For security reasons I would recommend leaving UAC on (to compare : who would use a Linux system logged in as root ?) That leaves two choices :
- change the permissions on the folder in Program Files where Prime95 is to be installed (this is not the solution I would recommend since quite a few people would not know how to proceed.)
- creating the folder used for Prime95 installation in a place where one has write access as a user. Obvious choices are a sub-folder of one's profile or even easier a sub-folder of Documents... And this is not a problem for most people.
